Please note that we will be monitoring the network throughout the event. Anyone copying large files (larger than say 20MB) will be duly clipped round the ear. Do it too often and you will be disconnected.

This may sound harsh but Windows file transfers are the bane of all LAN parties, as they suck the bandwidth and send the pings through the roof. As a result, we are banning all large file transfers at the event and yes we have got the software to do it.

If you want to bring Warez it's up to you, but start sending it over the network and you're out. I'm sure with enough CD-Rs in the room to do a small product run you'll all find other methods of transferring your GB's of data.

This doesn't include things like the full Quake II patch does it? or other Q2 mods?

If peeps were wantin to *cough* warez *cough*
(I just thought i'd put the *cough*'s in as it seems to be the thing to do http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif ) Could they set up a small BNC network between their PC's and disconnect from main network to do this? This would prevent lag over the network but would it be dissalowed due to extra cabling etc.?

Wizzo
01-02-1999, 01:46
Edge,

There are going to be 300 pcs in there spread out in a room 30x26m (not including the stage and side room, which are being used). The cabling arrangement is going to be a major headache anyway and it will really complicate things if people start trying to lay their own network cables in amongst that. It'll be just way too much hassle m8.

As for proper file transfers, these will be avilable on a public FTP server, which will be set to something nice like 50K a second. All main patches will be available on there and we'll be creating areas for the upload of mods, etc.

When we say we're monitoring the network, we're reasonable enough people. If you want to transfer legitimate files at 5am when everyone else is asleep we'll probably turn a blind eye. However, we cannot condone the transfer of Warez or porn over our network, as legally we could be held as an accessory to the distribution of illegal material... not something we want on our record m8 as I'm sure you'll understand.

LOL Russ..............

I still have 35mb of stuff !! (each sorted into order).

I would say forget copying any files until such a time as 5:00am in the morning. Then there wont be much bandwith hogging. With regards to warez, and all the other stuff that floats around on the network - I SUGGEST NOT MENTIONING IT ON THIS BOARD - DOH !!!!!

<Wait till we get to the event - then no one on the outside can hear us !!)

Wizzo, will it be ok to have the Tribes demo on the ftp, you think?
(it being a bit more than 50MB afaik).

Some people, you see, don't seem to get copies of it in the post when they should ( http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/wink.gif Russ)

Just a quesition Wizzo. Last WP lan there was no restrictions on data transfer and the LAN was fine. PL didn't raise it's ugly head any time during it? So how come now (apart from the legal views of course)?
I assume it's cos you'll be having and extra 220 peeps to cope with?
And what about Mp3's? Only 4mb each, but a lot of them transfered individually can equal a lot http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

Lucifa,

Legal bits aside, we really do not want to take any chances with the LAN. Last time it was purely Quake World, which is very "network friendly" in terms of packet rates, etc. However, this network is going to have all manner on it. This, combined with the sheer size of it, means we'd like to take mass file transfers out of the equation.

It only takes one person to transfer 2.5GB across the network and it will knock out the local bandwidth, causing lag for people on the same hub. If the transfer is across the network, it will affect two local areas, thus annoying more people http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif.

Terron
02-02-1999, 01:31
Tell you what Wizzo, why not have all the file transferring going on on a seperate hub, completely isolated from the rest of the network, at something like 4/5am when people are resting. This stops any lag, and lets them copy faster. Tribes on CD is a good idea, as well as *cough* evaluation *cough* software http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
But if this can't be done, then fair enough. I'd rather have a 12 ping than 500MB more files.

Russdy
02-02-1999, 01:32
I dont want to appear on a high horse, but Wizzo is spot on here, data transfers **** a network cos of the way they work. The data a PC sends actually goes to ALL PC's in a particular section'before' it gets to the one it is supposed to.

Imagine a file going at 10 MBps to all PCs (even tho only 2 are involved) and you see you have exactly..........ZERO bandwidth left for the others. Now 255 PC's in a subnetwork, using QW Rate 10000 want approximately 3 times as much bandwidth as would be available WITHOUT data transfer.

K, CD-rs at the ready guys.

I take it it would be a good idea for me to pick up about 20 Blanks before I turn up then http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

Looks like my 20 Gigs of HD space will come in useful for *backing up* software http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

Wizzo
02-02-1999, 16:08
At our stall we'll be selling (amongst other things) a few hundred blank CD-Rs.

VELVET
02-02-1999, 16:57
Hows about the actual CDR drives??? And a few extra gbs of hdd space??? Could do with a new pc too whilst I'm there...

Wizzo
02-02-1999, 17:18
If you want to order anything "unusual" like a CD-RW drive, printers, etc., then drop us a line and we'll give you a price. We'll be bringing a load of stock of memory, HDs, etc. but probably not enough for 300 people hungry for this sort of stuff. I've got a figure of 1000 blank CD-R discs floating around in my head, think that'll be enough for you guys?

Basically, it's best if you want to buy some stuff for upgrades at the event, to let us know beforehand so we make sure to reserve you some.

SniperUK

I will be running a file server which will contain 2 gb's of stuff on it. I can honestly say it wont be warez stuff (honestly !!). Nah, it will contain some stuff, but lots of training manuals, etc, for all those peeps that wanna know how to do things. Also will be some examination proggys on networking, NT4, etc, TCP/IP

Lets see how brainy u lot are !
