First of all I would like to point out that region 2 is BETTER!!!! First of all because it is recorded in a higher resolution. The reason it takes so long to come out over in the UK etc is because they have to convert the resolution to PAL standards, they also have a different colour system (NTSC). Oh and another point is that sometimes we do get more features than region 1. An example of this is BLADE. If you check there are more features on region 2 than 1. And another example is the Matrix, if you don't believe me then look, oh and why is it called Matrix Special Edition over here in the UK. There are few other films that have more features than the US, STARSHIP TROOPERS NOT being one of them.

I rest my case.

Actually there are 2 reason why it takes much longer for DVDs to come out over here than there and that is
A) NTSC --> PAL conversion. Doesn't mean better colours, just means that all UK T.Vs support it, you will get better colour out of an NTSC disc if you have a universal TV.
B) And the fact that films come out significantly later here than in the US, they wont release the DVD over here until they've squezed all the money out of the cinemas, as a result they will appear 6 --> 12 months later because of that.

As for the additional features it is hardly a rule that R2 have more features than R1, it just happens on occasions, and the vice-versa 90% of the time I have seen very few differences between R1 and R2 DVDs.

The PAL NTSC argument doesn't bother me as I play 'em through my PC which has a different system again :)

um, i dont think its the time involved in converting it to pal...they could do it early if they like, its just the issue of worldwide film release schedules and stuff.
well, thats normally it is for all other media. They want to get their moneys worth from the other teritories. terratories. things. not scarey, er, politians.

Well strictly speaking NTSC --> PAL would probably put DVD releases about a week or so back so there is a tiny amount of time involved but it is mainly because of the movie release schedules (Never understood why we get films 4 months after the states.. IT MAKES NO SENSE!!)

helps word of mouth (hello blair witch), although thats not always a good thing. sometimes its also due to national holiday trends (hello disney) and, er, apart from that, i can't think of any reasons...
