yes you should buy it right now http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

it is like an outdoor version of diablo with more weapons, more spells, more characters, more quests, bigger areas, more atmosphere, more addictive, just buy it ok http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

but its not random which made diablo cool http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/frown.gif

Its basically Diablo done with AD&D rules.

Which if you are a sad table top role-player like me it makes it completely adictive - just ask my wife.

You get an ongoing story commbined with random encounters which meet your characters curent ability level.

Plus like any good pc RPG you develop your character and the character of your party.

A word of advice if you are starting from scratch. Always play multiplayer - even if you are offline. That way you get to choose and support your own characters which will develop and grow - these can then be exported to allow you to bring any of them into an online multiplayer game.

oh did I say - go buy it - IMHO its great

It does have the potential to be good - but it currently seems slightly prone to dropping at least 1 person (out of 4) from the game as soon as it can... I imagine its amazing over a LAN with some mates - basically you're all in the same party so it would give you a much greater strength to be able to attack from four different sources at the same time...

Anyway - if you fancy a game of it online theres a 14.3mb patch that you'll need to download from the InterPlay webby and then feel free to send us a mail or post on here if you want someone to join your party...

Cheers

Guys - Multiplayer is ok

You shouldn't need the international patch, there is a 4meg patch (supposidly US only) [this is the only patch that the labs have tested]

From our tests the multiplay side is down to the network code rather than the vaugeries of Wireplay - so I suspect you'd get the largely the same probs from a LAN

I'd be interested to know if the performance using the international patch is better than the US patch.

Anyone know if u need either patch to play it over a lan? I'm having a 5 or 6 player lan this w/end and we're hoping to play BG for most of it but i haven't got either patch.

If none of you have a patch then you should be okay - problems will arise if one of you has the patch and the others don't... As you'll be on a LAN however its probably best downloading one of the two patches (they should be compatible with each other as they both have the same version number) and if its needed just copy across the network to anyone who hasn't got it...

i spend most of my day on a 6 player lan playing BG and i would advise you NOT to patch it. We found that it ran better using the box version.

The experience of the Wireplay labs was that without a patch we couldn't run any game more than 2 players - we deliberately have lots of different machines in the test lab - but the performance unpatched was pants.

With the US patch we could maintain a 4 player game both on WP and lan.

We never got round to testing the international patch because at the time it was unavailable.

Anyone else got any comment on the international patch?

International Patch: doesn't seem to work well with other patches http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

athanateus you could only have 2 ppl using the unpatched version????. We had it working fine with 6. After we all used the US patch it was laggy as hell so we went back.

We only have 2 copies of the game between 6 and we swap the cd's around as necessary. Maybe thats why we got 6 ppl working fine http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

I've not played it multiplayer yet, but surely if the party sticks together then they're all in same area and everyone needs same cd? We've just made someone go and buy a copy as well http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif so he'll be gutted if he doesn't need it. hehe

btw, how long does it take ppl to finish baldurs gate in game terms. it took me 104 days first time round with no cheating.

Um, I'm just coming to the end of the city of Baldur's Gate and I'm on about 111 days 4 hours (or there abouts http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif)...

I did spend a lot of time touring all over the place though and also using the excellently furbished royal rooms at the Friendly Arm Inn...

Nothing better than a good snooze to get those spells remembered http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

i'm currently in the middle of a game where i am trying to see how few days i can complete the game in. Its actually possible to make characters die of tiredness. I didn't rest my party for 9 days and Khalid keeled over and died http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

Trio. You can do the same with almost any multiplayer game. Just wait until one machine has loaded then give the cd to someone else. In baldurs gate the default timeout is 150 seconds i think (although you can change it). You can quite happily run 6 computers of one cd if you want http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

BTW, i dont actually agree with this, but we are students with no money so you can hardly expect us all to buy a copy http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

Dan - suprised that you got this working with 6 players over a lan

Reliability was a big issue regardless of LAN/Serial/Parallel/or Wireplay.

Maybe you have the nack - I always thought that PC's were emotional devices rather than logical http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/wink.gif

i think it must of been pure luck by the sounds of it http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif. We completed the game with 6 ppl and nobody dropped once. I know are network is extremely reliable, we use it for days at a time http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif.
