View Full Version : Gah. What!
Well I used a combination of wand of fire and my hardest fighter, plus the pause button and a few reloads...
I took my party up the east stairs, firebombed where the center of the bad guys would be while using my strongest fighter to take them on one at a time (to the far east of the room)... Everyone who wasn't firebombing were on arrows...
Its worth practicing this one though as it becomes a typical scenario from now on...

Hi,
Dunno how far you lot have got, but I'm having a problem here http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
I'm in Baldurs Gate itself, and I'm trying to do the top floor in the Iron Throne building.
There's about 3-4 dopplegangers, 2 hard soldier type cùnts, and a few mages.
Thing is, they're all as hard as nails.
I've got my main fighter down to -8 ac, thaco 6, str 19, with a longsword +2 +1 ice, and he is alright, but i get the distinct impression he's not good enough, or the way i'm doing it, isn't succeeding.
Has anyone that's done this bit got any tips, which spells to use, if any, which potions, tactics etc?
Cheers
Max
wands of summoning are youre best bet really.
Surround everyone with summoned monsters, cross your fingers and hope your pc is able to cope http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
a few archers are handy too, especially with arrows of dispelling or detonation. Oh also, dispel magic spell will bugger the mages right up.

Velvets definitely right here.
Cast the fireball spell into the middle of the room followed by a swiftly placed fire wand spell for a second helping of fire chaos. While this is happening, be picking them off with arrows.
Watch for one archer in there who is shooting at you with some bad ass arrows.
As soon as you can, use the reveal invisibility thing and when the fire chaos has finished (a couple should be down already), steam them with your warriors.
It only took me about a million different strategy attempts before coming to this conclusion so I think you’ll find it works.
Good luck

Um..but that's the strategy I already use for everything. And I'm only on Chapter 4, and I haven't even done Cloakwood yet...(Um..I have done every other quest it's possible to do so far though, and explored every square inch of every screen available to me...I think I'm becoming obsessive about it http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/wink.gif).

Nice to see another 'every square inch' person http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
I presume you also get annoyed when there is a little area you can't uncover because its at the top of a cliff or something???

Yeah, that really gets up my nostril. Um..I've been playing this game for about 60-70 hours now and I'm still only as far as Cloakwood - am I just slow or is this the norm for an "every square inch" person (oo-er...).
And do you start on one side and then sweep across the screen going up then down (or side to side) to make sure that you've covered all the ground? (and got all the X.P. of course).
Ele <- who felt a bit sorry for Brun and was going to hold on to Nathan until he had a raise dead spell...but couldn't be bothered, so traded him in for the X.P. instead http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif.
I really must get out more...
LOL - I'd say you were about on track mate, but be prepared to want to stay in Baldur's Gate for several thousands of hours...
Um, I'm a clockwise area uncoverer myself http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/stare.gif

Ok, I've just got to the bit that Quad mentions, and it's fooking seriously hard...I've tried fireballs (lots of them) and now I think I'll try invisibility and oils of burning (for some reason the game doesn't think that throwing jars of hot oil at people counts as "combat", so you can stay invisible while doing it...possibly some potions of explosions as well...if that doesn't work, I'm gonna go looking for more experience http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
Ele
Arrrg, I had a nightmare on that bit - tried it about 10 times and got mullered. Then realised that there was another staircase to the right (doh!) and that was much easier.
Like everyone else I o'd on the fireballs - just sat back and toasted em - left me with one opponent, the hard soldier blokie on the far left - but 6 on 1 and a healthy lashing of magic missiles did the trick.

Hmmm...I just my usual tacics of magicing up the odd couple of dozen monsters, hiding in a corner and firing arrows, hoping everything dies before I'm noticed. Nothing wrong with being a pacifist http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

Monster summoning rules. Fill the room with about 40 of them and you can sit back and have a smoke while the action unfolds.

You want 10 potions of invisibility and about 30 Oils of burning/potions of explosions (Ok, so it is a bit more expensive http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/wink.gif). The AI's a bit suspect at this point - it'll let you throw burning oil at them and they just stand there, and then die.
I didn't have monster summoning - I was still playing single player and had Dynaheir, who can't use the spell http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/frown.gif

(Will someone please remove this game from my sodding machine so I can continue my life).
Easiest way i found was cast a stinking cloud and a web straight away, along with reveal invisible.
Use your other three characters to use any wands or other spells of use.Failing that just use arrows.
Once web and cloud have been cast use as many fireballs as possible
