View Full Version : Mines vs Gnoll Stronghold
Help - what do I do??? I have to say I'm an RPG novice and I'm getting quite scared to say the least...
I have a level 1 party - I've ditched the two evil guys collected near the start and have since had a Ranger and Sorceror join the party... Unfortunately we're all pretty much poo and I'm a little reluctant to go to either of the above locations if I'm not really ready for it... I'm also in a dilema as the two new guys want to go to the Gnoll Stronghold and Gorion's friends from the Friendly Arms are interested in the Mines...
Any advice appreciated (although I'll probably have led my party to suicide by the time you read this http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif)...
Cheers

Cheers Tigs - but I've decided I'm just going to move in to a small inn and stay there till my money runs out... This way I get maximum shelf life out of the game and never have to do anything dangerous http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

Well I did the knoll stronghold first, and I think that was the right move 'cos the mines can be more tricky.
Ask us anymore queations and I'm sure we will try and help/confuse u more http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
Heh - I don't need it now Chas m8 - I've just done the mines and the Gnoll Stronghold and boy am I worn out http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
I'm sure I've been missing lots though - I think its time to catch up on all those little tasks and get some extra experience...
Anyone know where to go next???

Velv,
did you go to Beregost?
There is a fighter and a Druid their that you are supposed to meet up with before going to the Naskel mines.
Having done that go looking north of the Knolls and south of High Henge - you'll find an evil priest who has lots of magic goodies and a ransom on his head in Naskell (At least I think it was there)- large quanties of cash.
In the same rough area you should also find the captain of the guard. If you are careful you should be able to get a +3 sword of berserking - great weapon but a bloody nuisence.
If you want easy exp. go to the southern half of Naskell - theres a guy who keeps bothering you. Don't kill him!!! Let him keep talking to you - it takes ages but after a while he thanks you for being patient and gives you 800xp.
I've lots of other stuff if you want.

Well I've played this now non-stop for about a week - and by non-stop I mean every waking moment that I'm not at work (although at work I plan my strategy and while I'm asleep I'm dreaming of the final battle)... All this time and effort is finally coming good though - I have completed the mines, the bandit camp, have all the information required to get to cloakwood and have done many of the sub-plots and fought many different enemies... I've now got around 10,000 gold coins and a level 4/5 party which is highly competent and carrying many bonus items - although there are only 5 of us as I can't find a mage (having had all the mages killed as they were too weak)... This means I'll be dual-classing some lucky party member tonite so that I can take advantage of the 20 or so spells I've collected and the nice colourful mage robes - plus a few fancy wands that I nicked off some weird wizardy guys out in a forest somewhere...
I haven't yet found that evil preist or Basillius (?) or the captain - but that is where I'm going next having wandered all over the east of the map... Much has changed from the first few hours of playing when I thought the game comprised only what was visible on the map at the start...
Oh - and I killed that annoying guy - can't remember his name - but he followed me about for ages and in the end I valued my sanity far more than his life http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif And 800 xp is quite easy to find now - a far cry from the start where I was scared to take on more than one Gibberling at a time http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif I have to say that Baldur's Gate does very well in this respect... It starts you off nice and easy (and you can continue at this level for a while) but once you feel confident there are a whole host of different and unusual monsters out there... My favourites so far are the Ankhegs and the <trys to remember name> ones that turn you into stone (Petrification???)... Its almost at the stage where anything that gives you less than 100 xp isn't worth worrying with - its not going to jump you up to the next level very quickly anyway...
Right - I think thats probably disrupted my mornings work enough for now http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
Can anyone give me any advice on the best level to dual-class??? This is quite urgent as I'm thinking of doing it tonite but I've read of a 89,000 xp limit and say I have a level 5 cleric needing 50,000 xp for level 6 - if I dual class now will she need 50,000 xp for her to reach level 1 mage - or will it start with small increments again???
Cheers m'dears

when you duel class you effectively start with a new level one character. You cannot use old character skills until the new class is 1 level above the old one.
eg. duel class a level 5 fighter to a mage, you cant use fighter skills again until mage is level 6.
heres the tricky bit. The limit for experience is 89000. That includes the total of each class in a duel class. So, if you duel class a level 5 fighter on 50000exp there is a chance you will never be able to reach level 6 of the new class, because you will hit the 89000 limit. If you use the experience table at the back of the manual you can work out the latest time you can duel class to make it worthwhile.

And I thought I knew quite a bit - even if I have forgotten most of the earlier stuff.
Dual Classing has always been a bit poo! although I suspect that it is only worth doing in the early level in table-top rpging
I was told the limit was 87000xp - but I bow to your greater knowledge.
Are we getting obessesed with this - I know I am

Here's some beirdy-weirdy wisdom 4 ya!
Go everywhere, cover all the ground and kill all the beasties! What? Are you waiting for a reason? http://forums.gameplay.com/ubb/wink-anim.gif
Keep you weakling wizards at the back of your formation by dragging their portrait to the bottom slot, choosing the T formation helps shield the guys at the back.
The best dual-class, in my humble opinion, is to dual class Imoen into an enchanter as soon as she reaches level 4, but did you know that there's a Gnome Illusionist waiting just inside the front gate of Baldurs gate?
Oh, and while Khalid and Jahera want to go to the mines all they'll do is hassel you about it, Minsc and Edwin will leave the party if you take too long getting to the Gnoll stronghold!
Equip at least 3 of your guys with ranged weapons at the back of your formation and at least 2 (but no more than 3) tough guys up front with big weapons and the thickest armour you can get!
If you like scrapping then be a Paladin - you get to 'lay on hands' which can be damn useful! If you like magic be a priest - you get healing spells, you don't have to fart about with scrolls and you can still knock some heads together! And the joy at swiching on your level 7 turn undead skill while surrounded by skeletons! Booooom!
Don't be a bard, they can do a lot of different stuff very very badly!

I usually play as a fighter archer or necromancer cos i like being evil, and if u r a specialist mage u get an extra spell every level which is nice. I disagree with the use of tankies, at least later in the game. I use projectile people. i.e. archers and mages, or mages with slings.
At the moment ive got me - necro with sling, xan with sling, jaheira with bow, khalid with bow, and branwen with sling. result - nothing gets to within sword range by mixed usage of spells and/or missiles.
No probs.

But Khalid loves to get his big weapon out! http://forums.gameplay.com/ubb/wink-anim.gif Give him a magical long sword and a full metal jacket and he's such a happy little lamb!

BTW did u know that the levels of NPC's u can pick up (!?!?!) is related to your own level. I restarted a game with my lev 6 necro and Imoen chased me out into the woods, and after trying to beat her to death with my fists i noticed she had loads of HP's, why ? cos she was level 6 already. Cool or what!
I still killed her anyway :p

I've seen most of it already. Who would have guessed that hidden beneath these very threads were so many nuggets of meaty goodness.
Projectiles are useful but you can't beat the thrill of wading into the thick of battle with a hefty sword admist exploding bodies. Not my faverite tactic as I'm not a pure fighter, but ohh I love it so.
