View Full Version : Anyone else disappointed with GP3?
I really anticipated that this was going to be something special like GP2 was. How disappointed I am. Its seems like there have been 5 years of development of the genre which they seem to have totally ignored. It looks so similar to the original I sometimes have to kick myself that I'm not playing GP2 at higher resolution.
The graphics are very ordinary. After playing Formula 1 World Grand Prix 99 and seeing the great graphics on that this title is a total let down with the graphics.
And how about things like flashing your lap times up so you can compare laps? Or commentary? Or some colourful graphics rather than the monochrome on the steering wheel to give you the barest information about whats going on?
Not to mention the awkward menu system.
It's only saving grace is it runs fine in windows unlike my version of GP2 which I have to boot to dos to use. Oh, and it plays like GP2 so that isn't too bad. I believe they intend on kicking this title out every year ala fifa and I certainly won't be buying any more of them.
I can remember when i had X-wing v Tie Fighter. I was pretty disapointed with the graphics on that at first, thinking they wern't much better than x-wing, however, it wasn't until i wen't back to x-wing i realised how bad the graphics were.
It's the same with gp3, it is basically gp2, redone with better graphics etc. They could have done more with it in some respects, but not some of the thing you've said. They are for arcade games and gp3 ain't an arcade game. I have want to turn the sound off when watching the grandprix at the weekend without having Murray Walker down my ears when playing gp3. That just would put me off a good lap with the crap he would come out with.
I don't know what res you running yours in etc, but i suspect you ain't got the graphics up full, as i don't think unless u got decent spec pc u gonig to get the most out of the game graphics wise.
The rain certainly is the best i've seen in any racing game. Perhaps the general graphics arn't as good as they could have been, but if they were better i think we'd all be strugglnig to play the game because the physics requires that much processing power.
At least you can start a race on gp3 with the graphic on full with out utter slowdown like that other rediculous grand prix game effort.
I'd personally buy gp2 with better graphics any day of the week, as i was still playing it up until this year. I think if you go deep down into gp3, you'll see many of the extra things that have been added.

I feel so very underwhelmed playing this game. It's just not as good as I thought it was gonna be. The 1998 teams & drivers seems about right, as the actual game feels about 3 years out of date.
I'm gutted.
Is it no surprise that there has been no mag reviews of this game? A cover-up? I suspect so. :monster:
the pc gamer review was out yesterday, it revieved 95%, slightly generous i think
Hmmm, I suspect Edge will give it 8 - it is a very cool piece of coding, just needs a bit of spit & polish - now, can someone tell me how to play the damn game? My car keeps ending up in the gravel :)
And... Is there a way to get multiplayer working over the net? I haven't tried yet, just wondered if anyone else has? Or does it do a sneaky "same subnet only" server search?
it may not look that much diff but if u actually play it for any amount of time u will notice a huge amount of difference !
aside from the obvious stuff like rain, more realistic handling\wheelspin etc wat about the other stuff?
1,u can flip the whole car
2,the ai is far superior to gp2 even rookie is a challenge compared to gp2`s rookie mode
3,bits break on ur car u can see them tumbling down the track etc
i had a battle on rookie mode where the cpu car in front was swerving about in an attempt to stop me passing him which slowed me down for almost 2 laps,u dont c that kinda AI in any other f1 game do u?
f1 2000 lol wont even run on most ppl`s machine unless u have a top spec athlon or something, and f12 world grand prix? i aint even heard about it hardly never mind seen glowing reviews for it shows how good that is.
maybe it aint as good as we all hoped for but i for 1 am happy with it,imho it dumps on any other f1 game from a great height inc gp2 - the others aint worth botherin with.

I'm disappointed with the whole game. It just looks so dated.
Hi Faking, I kinda agree, Its still good fun to play and the graphics in the rain are good, but it is just GP2 tarted up.
I just have to sort out my Force FeedBack problems and I will probably enjoy it some more
but wasn't GP2 just GP1 tarted up? :)
It's hard to know what you expected, sure things like a safety car or red flags would have been good. But to be honest its good to be able to play the game again. I had trouble with GP2 not liking this PC.
The lack of netplay is annoying, as it a good utility for allowing lap times and stuff to be compared. And the wheel issues are a problem. There the only problems I have.
Yes its GP2, but much improved. I for one am happy with that :)

hmmmm... looks like everybody only cares about the graphics in games now.... when is the PC going to be like a console :)anytime soon if people have attieude like this
commintry in GP3???.. if that had commentry i defo wouldent of got the game, communtry is for console games and it puts you off quite bad.. Grand Prix 3 has to be the most realistic game i have ever played
also the bump mapping on wet weather is nice.. but then again, F1 games cant have good graphics because you cant hardley use any light sources in it
[MD]FishThrower
and just to add, commentary would have been a big mistake. When ever I had the misfortune to play Formula1 on the PSX I turned the commentary off.
A pit radio would have been nice though, rather than text messages which I often miss.

commentry's toss!!
so is the lack of hearing the other cars on the track!
its like your racing against ghosts....
and does anyone else think that when your doing about a hundred the nearby scenery movement makes you feel like your doing about 50...if that....
still a good game tho...

Pretty Boy Floyed - i haev to agree.. you cant hear the other cars which is poor.... i love when you do on other games...
hmmmm maybe a patch will come out fixing that i dunno
[MD]FishThrower
u prob cant hear the other cars for a simple reason, its a simulation aint it? and as such if u are in a real F1 car doing 160mph + with a helmet on with engine screaming inches away from ur head etc u aint gonna hr feck all else anyway.
altho i admit it would be nice to have it even if it aint to realistic.
Alright so you don't want comentary. Well how about communications with the PIT crew - them letting you know what's happening and so on.
As for the graphics, well I've a PIII 700 with a geforce 2 and it sets everything to maximum. The graphics are only 16-bit when almost every game these days puts out 32-bit graphics. The textures look like they are optimised for a voodoo2 as they are extremely blurry compared to for instance those on the Quake III engine. There are loads of graphical features missing like the red light on the rear of the cars in the rain!
And if knowing your lap times is for arcade versions of this then I'm obviously haven't got the point. You can never see the information you want to find out cause it only briefly appears on your steering wheel, usually when you are in a corner. Why they couldn't have put it up in the left hand corner I don't know.
If they had released this several years ago it would have been a worthy sequel, but for now it's a total botch and I'm not surprised it hasn't been to the mags for review.
I under stand that some people are a bit put off by the graphics.I have a GF 2 and the max frame rate you can set is 25.6fps,which I thought was a bit naff, but I have been doing some reading and there is a program that lets you alter the frame rate from 25.6 up nearly 85fps if needed, this might help the graphics and should make the game run better find it at http://www.alphaf1.com
I think this might be unoffical so make sure you read the text doc first, cya JT.
Digital - I thought of that - but I reckon ol' Mika can still hear another 800 HP engine about 6 feet away from his head, even if has got a helmet on :)
When you're sitting on the grid, you should be able to hear about 8 engines screaming at least. Just the one makes it sound like everyone else is just going to sit there as you storm off up the track. Needless to say, that never happens to me.
P.S. I just turned the throttle traction control thingy off for the first time (and it was in the rain) - holy sheeet. How the hell do you control these things??! :E
Chods
I certainly believe that sound is extremely important in a racing game. Listen to TOCA2 and you'll see what other cars engines should sound like, often you know you are about to be overtaken as your can hear the other car.
It sounds like GP3 has been rushed out without all its features - and it's been 5 years!!

Here's my effort:
Commentary is stupid and annoying in racing games. It's in football games because you play from a TV view, so it feels right.
The sounds of the other cars should be there. The excuse about not being able to hear them is false. Damon Hill said he heard Gerhard Bergers engine sounding a bit strange before it blew up once.
Also, you're not always doing 200mph. If you have spun or something, it would be good to hear the cars screaming past as you rejoin the track.
Finally, you can change the fps limit already. The people who created all the add ons for gp2 have already started and there are a load of new things out. If you go to http://www.alphaf1.com you can get them from the downloads section. I think http://www.f1-grandprix3.net should have them too.
Yes I am totally disappointed :(
Luckily F355 has come along though on the dreamcast and has quenched my thirst for new driving action :)
Shame on Hasbro for flogging the punters a re-hashed gp2.
When i seen it at last years ECTS I thought 'that looks pants' .............
.....................and I was right ;)
Hasbro 5uck - nuff said
nice to see El Mus really getting what GP3 is all about then :)
Of course its GP2 with a bit more, its what we all wanted. I've tried pretty much all the F1 games since GP2 and nothing has come close.
As for being dissapointed at the very early version at ECTS, you were one of the few. Most people came away from that stand saying wow, and looking forward to the game :)
Though to be honest your 3/4 posts about the DC game look a bit like spam ;)

Well I ordered a force feedback wheel and GP3 and got them both on the release day......
I installed them both and played GP3 for a total of 20 mins..... including installation time :E and now it just sits there...... along with the wheel, just looking sorry for itself.
I might be going over the top a bit because I have not really given the game a chance as yet and now probably wont for a few weeks since I have Deus Ex which is blimen tasty.
I have not condemed it just yet.......
Soz mate :)
I didnt mean to spam - I just wanted to let you guys (that are disappointed with gp3 like me) about a *brilliant* new racing game thats all :)
Im sorry but I feel the need to stick the boot in here and point my finger at what a real quality software title looks like - not the disappointing bug-ridden excuse for a game that is GP3 :)
OK no more ferrari posts soz! :D

Shoot me down in flames, but even though I am getting only 18 FPS I think this game is gorgeous! The physics are outstanding and having rolled a car in real life, I can tell you that the effects in this game are very realistic! I have had both the previous games in this series and I feel this is a good progression for anyone looking for real driving effects and not just pretty graphics. But I must be looking at this game through different eyes, because I think it looks superb. I'll see you out on the track:)
