BTW I have resently started collecting the essential X-men comics again and in the back of the latest mag it has lots of information about a new X-men TV cartoon which set around the x-men in their teens (and a new character called spiky or summat which is storms nephew)and with Wolverine and storm as the adults assuring the kids don't die too early for there more adult adventures. ;)
TBH it looks a little pants, let hope the movie is abit better :)

Actually, I am reliably informed that Jubilee is in the film albeit in the background.
Beast and (probably) Gambit are both likely to appear in the next movie.
Personally, I'm glad to see a superhero film that actually looks like a film. I'm so sick of lazy directors thinking overuse of primary colours and tilited camera angles is all it takes to adapt a comic character.

Well i'm no x-men expert but it seemed a little thin in plot department to me.
As a no brainer action movie it's worth a watch though, some very nice effects.
Not something i'd go back to though.

Apparently there is a chance that some more of the xmen and of course some more villains will be appearing in the sequel. Yes there is going to be a sequel!

Hmm
I have seen it, and to be honest, it is just 'OK'. The first 45mins of the film is pretty quiet, but gets a lot better towards the end.
BUT - I can see a sequal being better, as the characters are defined now, so they can concentrate more on action.

[Edited by khazmash on 08-08-2000 at 11:18 PM]
just came back from my US holiday today afternoon and i saw it...the fact is it's a good movie but as there are so many chracters it's hard for the movie to concentrate on all of them. hence, professor x, magneto, wolverine and rogue are the main centre point of the movie (and mystique get's overused which is very annoying) while the others are mainly sidelined....although i wish halle berry was given more screen time in that skimpy white t-shirt.....rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!
:E
*ahem*
all in all, along with batman forever and superman4, this is the best comic book to movie transfer to date (personally speaking)!!

urm, joke...no i dont think so. all i was trying to say was that along with those two movies x-men is the best movie adaptation to date.
which is what i already said..urm..
and x-men is probably the best movie adaptation to date, whether it's sequels improve upon it we'll have to wait and see...

13-08-2000, 18:29
X-Men is definitely the best movie adaptation of a comic so far but the first Batman is a close second. And Batman forever isn't anything special, infact it's quite rubbish -it should have stayed gothic. Superman 4 is plain crap - Nuclear Man.
Can't wait for the Spider-Man movie, but one word of advice for Raimi: lose the organic webshooters - Cameron's a good director but that idea was plain stupid and anyway why change a formula that has worked well for so long.
Flash Gordon is a good adaptation. :)

i must see it, but im confused about sum things...
1. who the hell is toad????
2. why the hell is jean grey in it??? shes poop, except when she turned into pheonix of course...rar!!
despite that fact i read the comics i actually have no history on toad, all i know is he came to only after magneto recruited him for his 'brotherhood' of mutants....and in the comics he's usuless but they've made him harder in the movie and definitely more aggressive..
i agree with you killy-bai, x-men is probably the best comic book adaptation to date, but there was something about batman forever i liked (anyway, as i said before it's a personal feeling) but the first batman was good also. the second one i absolutely loved danny devito's work as the penguin, he did him so wonderfully. and michelle pfiffer as catwoman.....mmmeeeeoooowwwrrrrrr :E *ahem*...and the fourth batman was crap...i can't believe they made bane poison ivy's servant!!!!!! did they have any idea what bane did to batman in the comics???
oh by the way people, toby macguire (yes, the boy from cider house rules) is playing spidey in the upcoming spidey movie...and this is from time magazine so the source is quite reliable. apparently he did so well in the crime fighting audition and fit into the costume so well they cast him immediately. he's started working out now to put on some muscle.
and oh, has anyone seen the first spidey movie which came out in the 80s (i think..)..i saw it ages ago and although it wasn't cheesy it was quite plain and it lacked that spidey edge..
and flash gordon...ahhhh
cheese at it's ultimate..loved every minute of it

I reakon all the villains seem a bit crap. Cept Magneto and Sabretooth of course. Apparently the original script had Juggernaught in it but Brian Singer didn't know anything about him (he'd never read any of the comics)
And WTF can't Rogue fly? Why does she not have superhuman strength? Where the hell is her slinky green and yellow skintight all in one piece? Why has she not got a grey streak in her hair? Why isn't she from the South?????
Anyway, I reakon the sequel should have either Mr Sinnister or Apocolypse as the main bad guy. Imagine what they could do with Apocolypse and CGI!
:)
I think she does have the grey streak in her hair?
But this Rogue has only just discovered that she's a mutie, so it's set some years before the comics current time period...
After all the comics been going for over 30 years.

[Edited by Sar on 15-08-2000 at 04:23 PM]
sigh, i said before it's a personal feeling...it's the best of the four superman's anyway...and it has everything the comics had..a bad guy to match and defeat him (like doomsday in the comics although he killed supes but supes came back), 'american' heroism, morality..every thing that seems cheesy in movies but works well in the comics! they all came across quite well in this movie
and yes the first two batman's are the best of the four but - again (and this is a personal feeling) - batman forever i liked because it made batman a titch more human which he also did in the comics after his experience with bane (who by the way released all of batman's enemies from arkham asylum and so made batman go on an endurance test like never before and batman went without sleep and food for more or less 8 days when finally bane confronted him in the batcave and thrashed him and dragged him to the city and broke his back and paralysed him for a year, for any more details go read the novel - knightfall). sadly, joel schumacher took this to such ridiculous extents in batman & robin he took batman all the way back to the goofy 60s.
and i dont like blade. it bored me for some reason...
Monkey Fool
16-08-2000, 08:51
Joel Schumacher ruined that film and continues to butcher movies. They should have rounded the Bat off after the second one. Number 4 was the biggest load of sh~te ever but at least Bane was in it!! NOT!! Azreal should have killed him while the Batman, the nutcase he was.
Val Kilmer as Batman was another rubbish move and that annoying git that played Robin....Don't get me wrong the movie could have been something but personally I think it sucked. The only good actor in it was Tommy Lee Jones.
B-B-B-B-----Blade boring???????? You sure yor not thinking Blade Squad or something!! :E At least you ain't afraid of going against popular opinion, which is cool!!

16-08-2000, 17:44
It would have been a complete injustice if Ep1 won ANYTHING. It was made purely with thoughts of merchandising in Lucas' head. How the hell else can you explain JarJar? But wait, he'll make a really cool toy. So will a nice slinky sliver ship. Much nicer for kids of today to play with rather than ugly, hurridly constructed ships like the Falcon.....I hate it incase you didn't notice.
:)
Starship Troopers was a comic? Thought it was a novel?
ST was indeed a novel by Heinlein, which possibly was a comic at a later stage.
EP1 sucked fetid donkey-testicle sweat. It's a black mark on an otherwise timeless and superb series of films. As Ostrich nearly said - how much of that film would have been radically different if mass marketing of toys etc wasn't a consideration?
If Lucas had wanted comedic elements all he had to do was make greater use of C3PO and R2. THey did all that for the first 3 films and did it with a semblance of grace throughout. Jar Jar imo is just crude.
Sorry, rather - How cwude!

Just got back and I gotta say it was damn good. Last film I saw which had me itching to see a sequal straight away was the Matrix.
The cast was superb. A wonderful example of casting actors who fit the character rather than corrupting the character to suit the start (Batman & Robin anyone?).
The storyline wasn't exactly complex but it never cheated the audience either. Also, considering the amount of introductory information they had to give and the groundwork for future story arcs, it worked pretty well. The introduction of Wolverine's claws was a scene that made me go tingly all over. Nicely done.
Another plus point for me was the fight choreography. It wasn't balls out Kung Fu stuff but each character had a distinctive style of movement which blended perfectly with their powers.
So, all in all, a refreshing film that shows you can convert superheroes to movies.
Saw it tonight - thought it was fantastic! Maybe it was because my expectations weren't high and I hadn't really been looking forward to it that much. I thought it was cast perfectly - and the acting was *gasp* actually rather good in places. I wasn't a huge fan of the comic, although I did used to like Secret Wars - but I'm optimistic about the next X-Men films (did I read they had all signed for 3 movies?) because of all the cool characters they could bring in. Now if they would just get on and make the Fantastic Four and Spiderman movies they've been talking about for years...
I also must add that I saw the film at the new Warner Star City cinema in Birmingham - the biggest in the UK with 30 screens and over 6000 seats! We were in Screen19 which was HUGE - massive screen, amazing THX sound system (best I've heard), stadium seating (the top of the persons head in front is level with your knees!), loads of leg room, killer air-con.......I've been to many cinemas (not just in this country) and this is the best yet, IMO. Check it out if you live fairly near - worth the journey.

The Wolverine Vs Wolverine fight scene was practicly the Matrix all over again (but of course, that is a good thing)
I also liked it when Ray Park was using a pole like his double-bladed lightsabre and gave a knowing grin to the camera ;)
And the Wolverine/Cyclops relationship was very funny:laugh:

-SPOILER ALERT-
Just saw the movie - awesome, brilliant, excellent, great.
One gripe - too short (although this may be because it was so good).
Anyway, a few bits of info on some of the cameos in the movie that I noticed:
Beast - the kid with the blue hair when Wolverine is hiding behind the pillar in the Mansion (must be him at an early stage in his mutation).
Pyro or Human Torch(Johnny Storm) - Kid playing with fire during class (he could be either of the two because Storm calls him 'John' and Pyro and the Human Torch are both named 'John', but he is more likely to be the former as Pyro is an original X-men character whereas the Human Torch is from the Fantastic Four).
Iceman(Bobby Drake) - Kid who turns 'John's' fireball into ice and also befriends Rogue (this is obviously Iceman as his name is Bobby in the movie).
Apparently Colossus is also in the movie but I didn't notice him - if he's in it please point out to me where and when in he appears (thanks in advance).
Apparently the Sentinels will appear in the sequel as well as Gambit, Beast, bigger part for Iceman, Mr Sinister, Jean Grey as Phoenix, Apocolypse, Cable, Psylocke, Proteus, Juggernaut, Night Crawler and Arch Angel (some are rumours, some are mentioned by director Bryan Singer as possibilities and some are ones who I want to be in any of the probable sequels).
Can't wait for the sequels and Hugh Jackman was perfect for the role of Wolverine. In fact most of the casting was done very well although Cyclops seemed a bit word-shy. Storm's wig looked silly - it would have looked much more realistic if her eyebrows were also white. Special effects were exceptional without feeling over-the-top.
Overall, I was very pleased with the adaptation as it kept the essence of the comic book characters (as in Batman) but didn't become campy at any time (unlike the Superman or Captain America movie or most comic-to-movie adptations come to think of it).
Erm.. sorry, but i didn't like it.
Special effects were good but its a pointless thing to say - all films have good special effects these days. Can't think of the last big-budget film i saw with bad special effects.
Rest of it was plot & story by numbers really - characters were handed to singer on a plate (30 years of comics means that little or no character development req'd by director) and storyline went like this:
1) Introduce everyone
2) Establish everyone's motives
3) Reveal plan
4) Bad guys get the upper hand
5) Good guys win after a bit of a pasting
Given the all-over-the-place comic storylines i don't think much effort went into the script tbh.
Some might say that to use original storylines from the comics would confuse non-fans. I personally think that films with a slightly more challenging plot tend to have a longer lifespan and can be just as popular in the ever-important opening weekend. See 12 Monkeys and similar.
Well I saw it for the 2nd time earlier today, and it's twice as good on a repeat showing.
You're a dick still cracks me up :)

Ive seen it 3 times now, its just so goddam amazing, they even got those subtle relationships perfect (eg Professor x / Magneto and Wolverine / Jean grey).
The mutants to make cameos were:
Jubilee (Katrina Florence)
Shadowcat/Kitty (Sumela kay)
Iceman (shawn Ashmore)
Cannonball (Jon Davey)
Collosus
Most of em you can see in or around Xaviers school. Jubilee (wears that ****ty yellow jacket) and Iceman (gets a speaking part) being the most obvious to spot.
Dont believe me? Names are in the credits at the end.
WeaselFierce
31-08-2000, 18:41
I agree, it's the subtle character inter-relationships which I think set this movie apart from most other Superhero conversions.
Whatever chronological inconsistencies exist with the comic the film has stayed true to the characters. And, as the latter Batman films show, you HAVE to stay true to the characters.
The film also has a lot of very nice touches to it which I liked. The Wolverine/Mystique fight scene where she's a double of Wolverine but he slashes her claws in half. I liked that.
I'm looking forward to the DVD.
