Well, yeah, you need a faster CPU for sure, the game is going to be mainly limited by CPU, but...
There's a fair amount going on graphically, so at least a GeForce or Voodoo3 would help and...
Something like a Soundblaster Live Player would help, it's amazing what a difference it makes.
My system is a K6-2 450, 128 RAM, Voodoo3 (AGP), and SB Live Player and it's perfectly playable with all detail on unless things get really busy, in which case I turn most things down quite a bit.
I recommend checking www.theregister.com for news on hardware, they currently have an article saying that the 1 Gig Athlon is going sub $500 next month...

I'm running a celeron 300 with 128mb and a TNT and my framerates arn't too bad. I have heard tell of amd processors causing some problems though, mainly with GeForce cards mind. They did release a patch to help amd owners...i'll see if i can find it and i'll post it here.
oyst.

I've got the Gforce With an Athlon and no probs, it runs very sweet. :) (Terra touches wood)
My setup is fine, but I know there've been lots of posts on the main GC forum ( http://www.groundcontrol1.com - hit the forum hyperlink) about bad framerates.
I don't think there's a simple solution, but you're not the only one having problems with a decent system.
If you've turned view distance up at all, make sure you knock that right back down.
