Hi, I've got a diamond supra SST (56k) modem in my computer. The best speed that I can get on my BT line is 37.3, when I tried my PC on a friends cable line I got 54k no problem but only 36k on his BT. The problem is I can't get cable in my area. Do I have a case to complain to BT (is this a DACS line that I've heard about????) and what can I do to remedy the problem?
Thanks
I believe a DACS limits to 33,600 bps? So not that. Check your modem settings - if it's a software modem the speed will depend on your CPU speed.

My CPU is an Athlon 700, so it shouldn't be a problem. I've set it up with default settings and downloaded the latest drivers. What kind of settings do I need to alter?
Dunno what PC you got mate, but my mate got a mesh and he had the said of modem.
They are software driven and are hideously slow :) however he connects at 42'667 and even though he connects at this speed his browsing etc is still at snails pace. I'd be interested to know what pings you get with the modem?
Eitherway the modems are ****e so get yourself a new one mate.
Hope this kinda helped

I also have the SST, I normally connect at 45,333. When playing on wireplay pings are 180-210, and on jolt 170-200. I have also tried the diamond pci 56i VCC, which is ment to be hardware(not true as its still PCI) the VCC is slightly quicker. Ping around 160-190 on wireplay, never tried on jolt. I only have K6-2 440, so I think the problem lies with a noisy phone line, get BT to check it and also up your gain(volume)on the line...dail 150(i think)and ask.....The modems not at fault, i dont think any other modem would make much difference as you line sound duff
I have a Diamond Supra Pro Internal V CC, and it connects at 42,667 with a low of 167 and an average ping of 276.
I made another post on this forum asking if anyone knows if the external is better because it is non-software.
The external 56e is quicker because it has a hardware controller, should ping around 140...
External or ISA modems are the best as for the 140 ping my generic ISA gets a ping of 101-160 usuall around 140, sometimes a lot less.
So ditching the HCF for a Diamond Supra Pro 56kE is the way to go? Will i get 5k/s downloads for example?
Well mate I get a lot higher than 5k a sec downloads but I don't as I have said have a diamond modem, but you may as well get one of them
Higher than 5k/s on a modem? Is that actually possible?
Dunno if its possible just know that its what i get :)
I just glanced at my download window now that said 4.6k/s which was strange because I'm (as always) connected at 42,667 bps. Perhaps it's to do with modem compression?
Dunno M8 all I know is that since I got rid of my old software modem my ping has been much better :)
Sounds like I need to get a hardware modem then. A lower and more stable ping would be nice, tho I was spanking some LPB this morning on Rocket Arena 3 - I got 13 wins in a row :O

just to let u all know i recently got a Diamond Supra Express 56E pro (about a week ago), and although my connection has'ent really changed from 42,667, my ping has dropped dramatically, from around 280-320, down to a very stable 130. Gaming is much better and i always get 1 or 2 green on Rogue Spear (nutoriously laggy for those of u who don't play it) but the modem handles it nicely.
and about the 5k download thing, i think in practice about 5.4K is the most possibly. But the download speed indicator can fluctuate, as when i start a d/l it normally registers between 10K-15K a second but this thens becomes a more stable 4.?k. I was once told it's something to do with an initial surge of data from the server, until it and ur modem sync in.
(hehe, if only my English teacher could see me now)
(he'd probably shoot me for my spelling!!)
theortical max for 56k is, wait for it 6.1(I think, far too pissed to retrieve it from the recesses of my tiny mind) so anything over 5 is good, i use I-SPEED with the dreaded SST(the software modem from hell,,,,,,,,,,,my arse) its quite good i ghet pings arounf 180-210. There well playable and downloads depend more on the server your talking to than your machine.
Well an initial surge of data can seem to make it high, for example downloading in plain IE5 it starts off at 7 or 8kb/s. But I'm talking about going from 4.2k/s to 4.3k/s and then up to 4.6k/s and this is after downloading for at least ten minutes.
On Go!Zilla download properties if U set it for 56k modems the max packet size bar goes up to 6.8k/s!!!
I'm talking after the initial surge of data 30 mins into the download it goes up to 4.6k/s occasionally. In Go!Zilla setup, if u set it to 56k modem the max packet size bar goes up to 6.8k/s!!
And BTW I won the Gameplay Webcam Compo! Wooooo! :) :) :)
