El Mariachi, the ' early ' Desperado, yet it is infinitely better!

Whereas I bet the common opinion is that Desperado is better...

Although 'El Mariachi' is a class film, I don't believe it is infinitely better than 'Desperado'. They are both great films in their own right!

And they both come on the same DVD. Which is nice. :D

Well... being a bit of a philistine... I saw Desperado first and then saw Mariachi and you can't beat Desperado for action but Mariachi has more finesse

Yeah, but Desperado has Salma Hayek and her 'charms'

So it wins hands down

El Mariachi is a classic American Independent film, whereas Desperado is a typical Hollywood production. The reason Mariachi is the better film IMO is because Rodriguez had as much creative freedom as he wanted, he was not being pressured by a Hollywood studio.

Also look at the budgets for both films:

El Mariachi $7000 - I know that it cost more when Columbia bought it and remastered it (around $200000) but Rodriguez made the film for $7000

Desperado $7000000 - Still a small budget compared to major productions but Rodriguez did not have much freedom, as is the norm when being funded by a studio.

Mariachi generally has a better, more realistic plot (apart from the now-customary omnipotent, multi-talented hero - he is a bloody mariachi, yet he is a crack shot with automatics). There are several original features in Mariachi, which are typical of Independent filmmaking - the increased frame-rate when the Hotel Manager phones Moco, to quote an example.

To sum up, Hollywood films will always follow the norm as studios are not prepared to risk millions on an untried idea, hence the constant stream of Teen Romantic Comedies etc. Independent films are where new ideas are being invented, as the producer will only expect to break even (or possibly even make a loss) and is prepared to take more risks.

Errr.... ok then I'll go now :)

Nah, I'm with you 100%, mate.

The studios try to give the audience what they want. Unfortunately, how do people know they don't want something unless they've seen it?

Originality is a genuine must for great film-making.

aragorn (?) you are so right! im writing a script for an independant film with a budget of zero so if anyone wants to ship in... i have actors (friends :( ) who will work for free and one DV camera but thats about it. i have some video editing software as well. i also have a lot of determination which i think helps but it is not as good as money. you would think a bank or someone would sponser a film by a bunch of sixteen year olds but no!!! i know i was shocked too! any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

p.s. sorry for straying from the point El Mariachi is better but Desperado does have those swinging charms
:homer: mmmmmmmm swinging charms...
