For some unknown reason my device manager is reporting that there is a problem with processor support. the message reads

"The NTkern.vxd device loaders for this device could not load the device driver (code 2)

I have tried updating the driver and despite finding it in the system folder and the problem is still there.

I have even done a new install of win 98 on top of the old one but that didnt help either.

Also after uninstalling mcafee virus scanner my system has become really unstable even to the point that 9 times out of 10 when i boot up i get a fatal error message + blue screen.
after a key press windows continues to load

this is beginning to drive me mad. any help would be aprreciated

NTkern.vxd? new one to me, kernal failure?

definitely sounds like a hardware failure rather than software. Try re-installing Win98 to a different directory rather than C/Win etc. (A different H/D would be better)

Other than that, open the box, remove all cards/memory modules etc. clean the edge connectors and plug em back in.
Oh, you could also try putting the bios settings to default, as they tend to be the safest/lowest, and should give you min problems.

Good luck mate.

did you change nothing befopre the error appeared ?? new hardware ? new software ?

I've had a simliar message before but I just run windows in safe mode - shutdown & restart- and it's gone......

Hi m8 sorry to hear you have this problem, what it is there sounds like you have installed a apps that has screwed the KERNAL for 98, now I have in the pas tried to correct with REINSTALL but have found that to be unreliable.

I suggest a clean reinstall and before you do this back up your DATA.ALL file from AIR ATTACK and any other files like Bookmarks and so then FORMAT C and start again.

If you are intrested I have the NEW FULL Version of WINDOWS ME on CD for sale and this CD also has many extra UTILS one of which is GHOST 6, this will alow you to rebuild the PC to a state that your happy with then run GHOST and copy this to CD and you then can return to this state in 12 MINs approx, will save a lot of rebuilds M8.

If your intrested get in touch through my E-Mail address and I will send CD by return MAIL.

I know its not the best solution but take it from me, you will find that WINDOWS ME is very fast indead on load up and also sorts alot of conflick errors that 98 or even 95 had.

I have sent this to BLADE and other members of AA and they like me are more than pleased with the results.

LET ME KNOW M8.

NTkern.vxd sounds like Windows NT file....

What is that doing on a win98 system.... the kernel is kernel32.dll

But you all knew that anyway, you just werent telling him.

Sounds like you really need a full disk reformat and reinstall.

When reformatting, dont forget to delete existing partitions, then recreate them using Fdisk.

This way, assuming you boot from a clean diskette containing Fdisk you can be sure that theres no nasty little viruses waiting to mess around with your reinstalled windows.

On a separate note, it is usually recommended to do a clean reinstall of windows every 9 months or so anyway as it gets clogged in about that period of time... try it and be amazed at the speed increase. (Or get linux and be very amazed !!!)

If you need any more help, ICQ me 68447396 and i'll do my best.
