View Full Version : frame rate drop in traffic?

Hi All,
Well I've had to turn the indestructible help on in order to get around the Hungaroring in one piece; I'm beginning to have some sympathy for Schumacher now! One thing I've noticed though is a big drop in the frame rate when there are other cars on screen, particularily around the grid and first few corners (after that they tend to either get knocked off by me or disappear into the distance). I've got an amd k62 450 and a geforce 2 64mb gfx card, 128 meg of ram. I know my cpu isnt the best but I was hoping for something a bit better. I've got the detonator 2 drivers for the card and direct X 7a installed. Is anyone with a comparable system getting this problem?

I'm using a P3 and GF1 (is that comparable?) - I think that Geoff's code is still highly CPU dependent, rather than graphics card dependent, so it doesn't surprise me that you get that. I occasionally (1 time in 10 maybe) get a slight stutter when a new car comes on screen (typically as they come past me on the first lap!) but I think the best thing you can do is turn the detail down a little, or drop the res by one notch, or maybe turn off some wing mirror details.

Hmm, seems a shame to turn down the detail setting but yeah I guess thats the way to go.

er, hum well that dont happen to me

specs

P3 500
128mb pc100 ram
V5 5500AGP 64mb

setting at 800x600 @ FSAA2x

no frame drops and frame rate set at 33fps

I think it's the P3 500 vs the K6-2 450 that is the main reason you don't get the same problem. Gring - Try holding down the O key (WHY isn't that a toggle, ffs Geoff??! ) when the frame rate drops to confirm that the CPU is overloaded.

well i got a similar system,

amd k6-2/500
128mb
v3 3000

im runnin in 800x600 @23fps,normally get around 80 - 100% P.O in the wet its a bit higher, have also turned off buildings, hills in mirrors - just left kerbs, fences andsmoke in mirrors seems to run ok mostly not spevtacular cos of cpu but its playable.

another thing i read is if u have fps probs drop ur settin 2 1 notch below estimated fps ,it supposedly helps.

There's no point turning down the screen resolution, as the problem is the K6-2 has not got the fastest floating point unit around(BTW mine is a k6-2 550). The graphic card you've got will keep the frame rate up whatever resolution you run it in, as the CPU sets up the triangles and the graphics card textures them. That card will handle anyhting the CPU can throw at it.
