guys
i have two computers and two modems, if i wanted to connect them i.e. like a lan. how would i do this, 'cos i want to try to play games and transfer some data between them. i thought that all u had to do is link both modems up with a phone cable that voila, is that right or am i talking [Y]'s??
Cheers

easiest way is to either use a serial or parallel cable( parallel cable is faster)between the comps as this will then set it up as a lan
but if you want to connect using modems here's how ( good for free calls between freinds where you are in a local area and it is free local calls with your phone company such as telewest after 8 pm and weekends so you can practice before you play on wireplay and will not die straight away or pay £10 for bt free or cableinternet( i used to before free weekend calls came in, but if no freind fork out the money hehe)
Most games do not support modem to modem connections except for dial-up
network connections (see below).use the phone cable like sugested
Modem to modem will run well on a network system that is running a TCP/IP
protocol stack (if you have a network administrator, ask him). Each
machine must have a unique IP address that can be seen by the game
(you may have to assign these). For those using Windows for Workgroups,
you will need to get the protocol from Microsoft, as it is not
generally included. Windows 95 users can see the next section, as
the instructions there will work for standard networks as well.
USING Modem to modem via a DIAL-UP NETWORK CONNECTION
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
You will need Windows 95 and the Plus! Pack for Win95.or win 98
Follow these instructions:
One system must be set up as the Server. Microsoft Plus has an option
to install dial-up server capabilities. The other system needs to be
configured as the client. The Dial-Up Client will call the Dial-Up
Server and establish a TCP/IP connection. You will most likely need
to have used the Internet Setup Wizard to add your dial-up adapter to
the list of network adapters in the Network Control Panel.
NOTE: This is by no means a trivial configuration. Setting up a
Dial-Up Server on a Windows 95 system to play two player modem to modem requires some technical savvy and experience with Windows 95.
If you are unsure of how to implement the procedure outlined below or
are still having problems, call Microsoft Technical Support.
DIAL UP SERVER-
1) Start "Network" under Control Panel
2) Highlight the "TCP/IP -> Dial-up Adapter" protocol and select
"Properties."
3) Click on the "Specify an IP address" radio button.
4) Enter a semi-legitimate IP address such as: 199.3.240.101.
If you already have an IP address here, it is OK to leave it.
5) Enter a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0
6) Click "OK" to go back to the previous screen.
7) If you do not want the player connecting to your system to have
access to your files and network, you need to do the following:
click on the "File and Print Sharing..." button and make sure that
both options are not selected. Then, click on "Access Control" and
select the "Share-level access control" option.
8) Click "OK" and restart the computer.
9) Start the Dial-Up Networking program.
10) Click on "Connections," then "Dial-Up Server."
11) Select "Allow Caller Access."
12) Click on "Server Type..."
13) Under "Type of Dial-Up Server," select "PPP:Windows 95,
Windows NT 3.5, Internet"
14) Under "Advanced Options," only the "Enable software compression"
option should be checked.
15) Click "OK" and then "Apply."
16) Wait for the other player to call your system. Make sure that
the other player knows your password. In the Dial-Up Server
dialog box, you can watch the Status Line to see if the client
has connected to your machine.
17) If you try to start a multi-player game and it brings up a Dial-Up Network dialog box, click on "Cancel;" DO NOT click on "Connect."
NOTE: If you want to use your Internet Service Provider after using your computer as a Server, go into the Network Control Panel,
change the "TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter" protocol back to it's
original settings (if needed) and restart your computer.
DIAL-UP CLIENT
1) Start "Network" under Control Panel
2) Highlight the "TCP/IP -> Dial-up Adapter" protocol and select
"Properties."
3) Click on the "Obtain an IP address automatically" radio button.
4) Click "OK" to go back to the previous screen.
5) If you are asked to restart the computer, click on Yes.
6) Start the Dial-Up Networking program.
7) Make a "New Connection" to the system that will call the Dial-Up
Server.
8) Start the properties dialog box of this New Connection by
right-clicking on it and selecting "Properties."
9) Click on "Server Type..."
10) Under "Advanced Options," only the "Enable software compression"
option should be selected.
11) Under "Allowed Network Protocols," only the "TCP/IP" protocol
should be selected.
12) Click on "TCP/IP Settings..."
13) Click on the "Specify an IP address" radio button.
14) Enter a semi-legitimate IP address such as: 199.3.240.102.
If you already have an IP address here, it is OK to leave it.
This IP address must be different from the Dial-Up Server
15) Click on the "Server assigned name server address."
16) The "Use IP header compression" and the "Use default gateway
on remote Network" option should be selected.
17) Click OK to exit the TCP/IP Settings dialog box.
18) Click OK to leave the Server Types dialog box.
19) Click OK to leave the properties of the New Connection.
20) Start the New Connection and click on Connect.
After connecting to the remote Dial-Up Server computer, you can start playing multi-player like you would over the
Internet, except you should use the Internet/LAN IP Address Autodetect.
to transfer files use hyperterminal or super voice which will set up the protocals so that you can transfer files if you have trouble using the file and print sharing as you have to enable shared access on both computer which is a security risk. personaly for swaping files between computers i would just remove one hard drive form one computer to another takes 5 mins and is a lot easier.
but for playing games use the process mentioned above using either parallel cable(faster than serial) dial up network if freind in local area. or buy a null modem cable which acts the same as the parrallel cable but is again faster but you might have a spare parallel or serial cable around the house thats why suggested it.
