Who can explain to me, in laymans terms, what a SQL Server Database is, and what it does?

SQL is a

Structured Query Language.

Basically it is a database that can use many connectors like MySQL/Access to access it.

It holds lots of information on what ever you put in it.

SQL is a rival to Oracle, which is also similar.
