View Full Version : VIRUS - I need some help, Slackerz.
We apparently have a virus, we were sent an email from a person my 'rents are doing business with. The file attached was called 'Happy99.exe' - I assumed it was something the 'rents were waiting on, so I opened it.
I swear, you can't trust anyone.
All the file is, is a little window with fireworks, "Happy New Year".
So I dunno what it's doing - PC Cillin '98 is not detecting any virus in our compie, I deleted the file from the folder and the recycling bin. But we have received emails from people we've emailed saying they received an attached file from us that contains a virus, so it seems to be attaching itself to every email we send out.
I know like jack about viruses - what do I do??
Do you have a proper virus program like Dr Solomans or Nortan Anti-Virus?
If not I'm afraid you might have to spend some cash on one. To be honest anyone online should have a good up to date virus checker. Like the Lady said you can't trust anyone these days!

I've found the 30 day trial for Mcaffee Virus checker...here (http://download.mcafee.com/eval/evaluate.asp#anti-virus)
hope that helps http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
I think I got rid of it...
Umm... it's a worm. I looked up 'Happy99.exe virus' on goto.com - here (http://www.goto.com/d/search/;$sessionid$XSWXIXYAA2AEJQFIEFPAPUQ?type=home&Keywords=Happy99.exe+virus)
Look at all that, why didn't I have enough sense to look up the file before I put it in our compie?
Anyway, I went here (http://www.mals.net/happy99.htm) and supposedly got rid of it.
After I had downloaded the happy file today, we kept getting 'illegal operation' thingy and had to shutdown. It was doing that over and over again.
What the thing did was send the email intended, then sent another with the virus attached. I tested it - sent an email to my online account - the first time it sent 2 emails, the next time {after the 'cure'} it only sent the intended one.
So I guess all is well. No more opening any exe files for me. http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
Thanx peoples. http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/wink.gif

Luckily it's not a nasty one, it just spreads iself again.
What I would say is if you use Outlook Express download this:
http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/iebuild/dlbhav/en/136291.htm
if you haven't heard there is a virus that has been verified that doesn't even need you to run a file, a hole in OE and IE lets it in, the file above plugs the hole.
Cheesebury, who only knows these things because students are stupid
I don't use Outlook, I'm a Netscape hoe. http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
By the way, I used to have Norton AntiVirus, but our compie fried and we didn't use it afterwards.
As far as I know, the only antivirus protection we have in PC Cillin '98. We should probably get something more up to date though - it didn't detect this virus.

Heh...Norton AntiVirus just wrecked about 150 of our machines at work when they installed the new update on the server - on some machines it came up with a message about whether you wanted to "repair" or "ignore" something..and if you clicked "repair" it deleted the command.com and autoexec.sys files (plus a bunch of vital system files) as part of the repair...nice http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif. I.T. had to re-image them all.

Oops...that'll be config.sys and autoexec.bat then. /me slaps forehead...Doh!
