They're wrong. You do need an NIC/Ethernet card.
Dabs do a Dlink or Bay Netgear 10/100 for well under £20. (Not that you need the 10/100, but it shows it's an up to date card)
To register it, once you actually have the modem, call NTL and ask to be put through to the Cable Modem group in Newport. If they won't put you through, then you can try dealing with the normal customer :monkee: , but my experience of them is not good.
You need to give them the mac address of the CM. It's printed on the box and also on the back of the CM itself.
Once they've inputted that into their DHCP server and database, when you connect you'll get your 512K straight away. Otherwise you'll be limited to 128K until you've registered, or might not get a connection at all.
I'd get that done before the actual installation :monkee: turns up, because you're then good to go as soon as the cable's got to your gaming den.

Oh, and you don't actually need to run any of their software to set it up. I doubt you'll ever get your "Welcome CD" from them anyway. Mine took 6 months to turn up.

How did you pick the domain name/password (if one)? I'm not getting NTL but should be in a Telewest area by November and have no account with them so wondered how this was done...

There's a site address you can access only while on NTL's network. I'll dig it out and post it here anyway.
It allows you to register and sort out email addresses and passwords etc.
I managed to get mine all sorted out while it was still running at 128K, and before the cable :monkee: had been, by yanking the coax out of the back of my cable TV box and sticking it on my feverishly unpacked cable modem.
BY is a bit different, because you have to register your NIC card's mac address too...which is a bummer, cos you can't easily switch between machines/NIC's. For the average Joe it's not a problem, but for Dr. Bodgit-Tinker here, it would p!ss me right off.
