Hey Yo!

My local Tesco have got their DVD players in, £179.99 I think. I can remember what brand they were as I looked at the price and assumed they were crap.
But a friend has just told me that they are pretty good.
Does anyone know if these are half decent as am quite interested in investing in one?

The whafedale you are taking about

The BEST dvd player under £200, has no problem discs, has a muilti region hack on the remote

Your m8 is correct. These are wharfedales and are cracking players for the money and also multi region from the handset. ie no chipping required to play discs from the states. Some peeps on this forum have them so they can probably tell you more but they are certainly reccomended.

It's a Wharfdale m8, and by all accounts it's a good budget DVD player. It should still have a remote control region crack to allow you to watch DVDs from all regions, unless they've changed the firmware.

However, I'm pretty sure that most of the budget players are based on the same electronics and manufactured in China, regardless of who badges them. So I doubt you'll see much difference in the way of features and quality with players that are in the < £220 bracket.

You might want to have a quick check in the buyer's guides at the back of most DVD magazines (e.g. What DVD, Total DVD) to find out what the latest best budget buys are.

Oh AL - u should have asked me in channel :)
I have a Wharfedale and they ROCK!

Excellent sound and picture, can play R1 and R2 DVDs via a hack on the remote (which u only need to enter in ONCE).

Get it - u won't regret it

What with the:
"(which u only need to enter in ONCE)"
Does it disable the ability to play discs if u type it more than once?

Another cheap player that has had very good write-ups is the Mico A980. It is a multi-region player £179.98 and includes a built in dolby digital decoder with 5.1 channel outputs (unusual for such a cheap player).

Check it out at http://www.unbeatable.co.uk

Apparently these are also selling like hot cakes and I've been told by someone who has one that they are multi-region out of the box.

You'll love me for this.... (although I could be wrong as I don't have one)

I read that thw Wharfdale has problems with the Jaws DVD, somthing about it not be able to read the menu's, so you have to chapter search or something. Funny thing is they reckon that it isn't all of them, just a few of the machines (perhaps a different batch?

The original Wharfies had problems with certain discs. But there is an updated model just been released called the 750s that has had all the problems fixed.
