I've done this when I was about 16 in Leeds off of the HIlton near the station.
Did it in 3 or 4 jumps.
great fun
Phoe, it'll be fine. The guys helping you out are normally soldiers and do this ALL the time.
You have a safety rope and even if you faint half way down, they'll lower you down nice and gently.
I'm really tempted to come and watch actually but I'm busy this weekend.
have fun Phoe, it's not that bad, really it isn't.

Jumping out of a plane at 12,000ft - now that's fun!

Pfff 12,000 feet, that all :)

Phoe, abseiling really is a peice of cake, the guys that will show you the ropes, if your excuse the pun will be very well qualified, and do it all the time :)

Well its either them, or i'll do it for you :P

Anyway the worst part is going over the edge, once you've done that, its a peice of cake.

Trust me, getting to the bottom, breaking that mental barrier is all the reward your need, although a drink or too may not be such a bad idea :)

well if mother isnt wanting to get back too leeds after it ill be hiding in one of the pubs near by celebrating if i do it, comiserating if i dont, so if you come anyof you im sure you will recognise me ill be the one preverbially making the feces come early.

there are two other girls doing it emily and claire so it will be ok.

Since Bond done one, we all know what a HALO jump is all about. :E

22,000ft? When I done my jump, the first half took 30 seconds falling with style and the second half took just under 5 mins on a chute. How long does 22,000ft take? Me wants a go!

DizMatt
01-09-2000, 13:59
well I'd like to go parachuting one day...getting my nerve up for it...tandom jump or something I think.
Is it that expensive!

Anyway a HALO jump would scare the crap out of me.
Is it true Roast that you have to freefall for most of it otherwise you'll freeze to death? and dump your chute at about 20 feet so you don't get tangled up and drown?

Roast?
01-09-2000, 15:16
Ok the jist of a HALO is this :)

1: Drop out of a plane in a wet suit, with oxygen tanks and equipment. BTW plane is high.. very high. Miles high!

2: Free fall for ages, you go very fast, upwards of 200mph!

3: Pop your shoot about 10 seconds before impact with the water, let go of your shoot about 2 seconds. If you go into the water with your shoot attached, you are in life threatening situation.

4: Try not to smack your head on your oxygen tank when you hit the water, the force of it would fracture your head. And try not to break any bones when hitting the water, you want to be a stream lined as poss.

5: Switch to your other oxygen suply, because the oxygen/nitrogen mix for falling with would suffocate you under water.

6: Swim around, and enjoy.

BTW if you do any of these wrong, like the realease of your shoot too late... then you would go into the water too quickly, you would go too deep, and your lungs would explode.

Scary sh1t isn't it :) Honestly it sounds worse then it is, but it is dangerous.

You would use a HALO jump mainly in the entrance of special forces, ie having the plane above radar sweeps, and free falling and poping the shoot lowever then the radar.

There are also other reasons why you would want to do this :)

thanks for the info as always roast but I thought that the nitrox mix is used underwater...
just that you need a different type of breathing apparatus is all. I'm sure they use nitrogen/oxygen underwater.
ALso helium/oxygen for saturation diving.

Roast?
01-09-2000, 16:34
True, but you need a different mix (i.e different percentage) think its 21% oxygen, not sure though...

-Maniax-
01-09-2000, 16:48
Normal (recreational) scuba diving just uses normal air taken straight from the atmosphere which iirc is

~78% Nitrogen
~19% Oxygen
The Rest = Trace amounts of other gases

It's all compressed into the cylinder at 230 * normal atmospheric presure.

Roast, It's interesting that you say navy divers use a higher O2 %, any ideas why?

Roast?
02-09-2000, 00:44
Cause we go deeper, i think if you go down more then 30m, you need a different ratio, but to be honest i really don't know alot about all that stuff.

when you go below a certain depth, oxygen becomes completely toxic, so if you're going really deep you breath in a mixture of compressed helium and oxygen (called heliox, btw) to stop you from dying through oxygen poisoning. true.

I was scared leaning back, and i had a strange harness on, the guy said that iff i slipped id end up upside down, so they put this other harness round my chest, made it feel a lil safer, but it was raining and windy and the scaffold was shaking and the wind was making weird noises.

I got over the lip at the top and was stood horizontal thinking god this feels strange and the guy said...move to the right, i did and i could see round the building up the street all the busses and cars coming towards me and the actual hight...i screamed and closed my eyes, walking backards then it got really weird, all teh noise just dissapeared, all i could hear was the guys voice coaxing me down.

we were told not to touch the window at the bottom as the place didnt want foot prints on it so we had to jump then and slide down.

My hands got rope burns, they dont hurt just look funny and i couldnt stop shaking till 3pm (did the abseil at 10am) i wanted to go to the pub, but mom wanted to get home, so we went for a meal instead, and i was downing tia maria and Mochachinos like nothing.

I gather i could do it again, and i signed up for a parachuting fundraiser.

well done Phoe...*huge congratulatory hug*

I remember when I did that I jumped to the bottom in about 3-4 goes (120ft in all) and the squadie at the bottom said "I ain't touching that yet" pointing at the figure of 8 (the metal loop the rope goes through).
Anyway still on a hight I said "why?"....
BLOODY HELL it was hot...ouch.
The friction of the rope heated it up bloody fast I can tell you...
Anyway would love to do it again but it's expensive...
maybe they can host a similar event at i6????

The Idiotic Genius
09-09-2000, 09:44
me done that as well. Also what I did was i cat (thats where you jump out then let the rope out so you go down faster) jumped this wall in two but at the end of the second jump the rope was going through the figure 8 well fast so that got damn hot then I tried to stop-rope left burn mark on my hand which was close to needing hospital treatment, then as I had not stopped I hit the wall and the ground at the same time quite fast...ouch...anybody got a bandaid?:bigcry:

WarHawk

this friction thing should be more widely available. as a physics a-level student i went abseiling from a platform in a tree (ie- with no rock to walk down) and i didn't start to slow (from 80 ft up) till about 10 ft from the ground. OUCH! all the skin off my hand and a sprained tendon is painful.

The Idiotic Genius
10-09-2000, 09:43
Louhi and you called me a daft sod War everybody knows when you free absiel u wear gloves for exctly that reason. Really the reason you dont wear them on rock/wood walls(you can if you want)is so that if you slip its easier to get your feet back on the wall without those anoying gloves!!!

Ok, I know this thread has died down but I just came across this snippet of info and thought Phoe might want to go for the record (I think I'm going for the Evil B@stard Crown with this one :E )

*****************

On August 16, 1960, a US Air Force balloonist named Joseph Kittinger ascended in an open-gondola balloon to a record-setting altitude of 102,800 feet (31,300 meters). Wearing a pressure suit and a parachute, he stepped out of the balloon into very thin air.

Kittinger free-fell for four minutes and 37 seconds. With almost no air resistance at that altitude, his vertical speed reached almost 1000 kilometers per hour (600 mph) -- about the same speed as a jet airliner, only going straight down.

Eight minutes after his chute opened, he landed at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, having set records for highest open-gondola balloon flight, longest free-fall, fastest free-fall, and longest parachute descent.
