Recently had soltek 75kv mobo fitted with Tbird 750mhz cpu and gforce2 gts. When i play SOF(online),at beginning of game it locks up(stops and starts)for a few seconds. In my bios the temp of cpu is 114-119 degrees F,and system temp is 107-109 degrees F.I was told this is 2 hot.Got athlon cooler, but maybe its not up 2 the job.Bit thick on all this techy stuff,so what do u reckon, game freezing down to cpu 2 hot or is 119F acceptable.Hope some1 can help b4 i spend more money on cpu cooler.

That's well within the safe limits for Durons/T-Birds I think they recommend keeping the temp below 60c/140f (your's is about 48c).

Have you got thermal paste beween the heatsink and the chip?
Some heatsink/fans use a thermal pad (cr@p), a thermal paste can reduce the temp by several c, and a good quality paste like "arctic silver" can reduce it even further (by improveing the transfer of heat away from the CPU to the heatsink).

Also do you have a case fan behind the CPU?
Most ATX cases allow for one, and they move the hot air away from the heatsink, improving it's efficiency.

You can never have too much cooling anyway, I got one of them real sweet Golden Orbs, it's the biz.

As the Werewolf says you's seems within good operating limit's could it be motherboard drivers, perhaps AGP drivers even, or does it only happen with the one game?

Your system temp is very high and is causing the mobo chipset and/or Geforce to lock up.
You could try running without the case side panel, and that will lower temps by a large ammount.

IT doesn't sound too hot IMO, so does this only occur on this game? Only when you play it online? By the way you put it, it sounds like it carries on after a couple of seconds, so it could be getting info from the server.

hey if you think that thats hot, then check out my Pentium 3 500 @ 560mhz, reported as 127degrees C (yes C !!)

beat that :E

If that were really the case then it would of melted ages ago.

do you want a screenshot of it to prove it ?!?

Well i have been getting game freezing all the way through a game of sof(online),its also doing it offline.Tried reinstalling game, still had prob.Took side casing off and run a big fan,and that dropped temp down 2 95 ish instead of 119,but sof still freezing, stopping and starting. So did a complete reformat, and just this minute tried sof and at the mo(fingers crossed it seems ok again),its all mucho weird.Anyway gonna get a better cooler etc,as guy said earlier the cooler the better.Still dont know what prob was though.

Hope it stays stable now.Cheers ppl.

My Athlon t-bird 900mhz is running at 42-46°C with a 10k rpm silver orb sitting on it. I took the heat transfer pad off it and used some thermal paste, but it was pretty cheap so I guess thats why its not so good.

Well i spoke 2 soon the problem is back.A m8 of mine seems 2 think its a driver prob, anyway was using nvidia 522s so i tried the 533s,alas problem still there, still running with casing off and temp is lower but hasnt solved prob,so i guess it aint the cpu overheating.Any1 any ideas.

By the way the spec is Tbird 750mhz,Soltek 75kv mobo, gforce gts2.It worked okay until a couple of days ago when i would join a server play sof ok,then it would lock up while loading next map.Turned it on next day and got one long beep and a short 1 with no display,i rebooted and it went into safe mode, then ctrl alt delete from safe mode and my display came back.

After all this stuff happened i started 2 get freezes etc in sof.Cheers

No, it's more like 5000rpm, the site that did the original review of it had a typo, and loads of other sites assumed that 10k posted in the review was right;)

AGP mini port drivers, make sure you have the latest/correct, it may help your freezing problems

Could be your harddrive,it could be causing disk swapping which slows the machine down, make your virtual memory 1.5X your system memory. youve got 128mb I think so make it 200mb min and 200mb max, youll find it in your system folder.

Hope that helps :)

i read a good article about swap files and that set it 1.5 or 2x the system ram is a load of crap
what happens if u have 512mb ram
do u set a swap file of 1gb :O
i'll try and find the site for ya'll to read

have you tried the detonator 3 drives from http://www.nvidia.com

they are supposed to be the best, but i wouldn't know as i have a Voodoo5 5500 <---

What is it with these numbers ?!?!

Thorne
10-09-2000, 16:40
Jay-Dee its just a guideline,as long as they are set 2 the same figure thats all that matters, and a swap file of 200mb will run every game available,it would only need increasing if you did heavy graphics work.

also if you have 512mb who needs a swap file?? :P

BTW Windows 2000 does this for you automatically,so Microsoft have realised that it does makes a difference. :)

I shall look into the virtual and system memory idea u mentioned.Thing is it was ok till a couple of days ago,i havent altered anything. When i play sof the 1st 10 seconds especially r a nightmare it freezes stops and starts jerky etc,it sometimes settles a bit after that, but some maps r worse than others and its freezing every few seconds.

Even when i enter a game and dont move say 4 a minute, and then move it starts doing it,fidd still reckons some kind of driver prob, iam on 533s at the mo,and iam running out of drivers 2 try,the new detanotor drivers i will give a miss, couple of ppl with gforce cards i know tried them and got a 20% decrease in performance.

So driver prob, hardware prob that is the question.By the way tried wireplay direct instead of my BT connection just in case, but it was still doing it using wireplay direct.Cheers every1 so far.

are u sure its not your modem giving u packet loss or lag
what are yuor pings like in game
my half life is a bit jittery for 2 or 3 seconds after it joins the server and then it settles down
its not really a problem for me

btw heres that memory guide i was on about

High rpm fans are just noisy, better to have a large slower one than a small very fast one, as the larger one will still move more air and be much quieter.

Mobbit
11-09-2000, 19:03
Lo jaydee,in sof i ping between 135-200 depending on map etc,its never been a prob b4,also tried lots of other servers as well as wireplay ones and the problem remains.Cheers

I dunno if its right or not, but its reported as 10,000rpm in the ASUS Probe software. (It sometimes drops to 5000rpm, usually when it's idle... perhaps its just a bug in the software.

While we're on the subject of fans, how do I connect my case fans so that I can get an RPM reading off them? They haven't got the right adapter on the wires to connect to the motherboard sockets, all they've got is the standard power male/female four pin adapter.

I'm afraid there is no way to get an RPM reading off a standard case fan, they lack the sensor required :(

But you can get case fans with the neccassary senor, these ones plug into the motherboards fan header and will have their RPM reported in the bios, and any monitoring software that you use (motherboard monitor 4 is pretty good;) ).

You can order the fans here http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Fans_and_Grills_4.html
they cost about £6 plus P&P

You'd need the 3pin variety :)

Fragchild
12-09-2000, 16:13
Beware when doing this, some of the bigger fans draw a fairly large current on the 12v rail and when using a 3-pin connector this can damage the mobo as the current it has to supply is too high.
