View Full Version : Gaming Network
Hi
I'm thinking of setting up a simple home network so that me n me bro can play TOCA2, GP3, UT or whatever against each other. Now, are the 10Mb network cards and hub adequate or do i really need to go for the 100Mb cards etc? What difference in performance will there be between the two?
My system is : P3 600, 128MB RAM, G400 MAX, Win98
Bro's system : Athlon 600, 128MB RAM. GeForce DDR, Win98SE
Many thanks for any advice :)

10Mbit will be plenty for your games! I mean, you can play them on 56k fgs!
Compare 56Kbits with 10Mbits!
Allthough, i wouldnt know cos i have 100Mbit :E

A 10 Mb LAN setup is well ahead of any requirements for any online game. To be honest, all you really need is a serial link , as unlike a modem, you've not no lag, no packet loss, and no ping. So use the 10Mb cards.

Hey m8 i think i have the perfect article for you which should solve your queries. I suggest the crossover cable as mentioned here->

if you want to know more just ask or ICQ me in sig.
HTH! :E
I think you will find a Null Modem cable as suggested is not particularly good cos they cost about a tenner and are crap in comparison to a coulpe of network cards. Also you cant have one longer than about 10m if that helps you.

I gather from your post above (or below by now :E)that its your 'baby' so just for your info the images for section 4) & 5) in home networking didn't download for me. Not sure if thats a fault at my end or not though!
Cheers
