While I still love 'The Watchmen', 'Batman: The Killing Joke' and 'The Dark Knight Returns' (which are the books which hooked me onto comics) I think, all in all, my FAVOURITE graphic novel is Howard Chaykin's 'Black Kiss'.

It totally cracks me up every time I read it. The balls-out audacity of the story is just superb.

Vampires, Pornstars, Hitmen and the Church - tell me there isn't a movie in that!? :D

well...i haven't red too many but 'The Dark Knight Returns' is definitely my favourite!! seeing bruce wayne as a 50 year old and robin as a 14 year old girl was astounding to say the least!!

and that fight with that leader of the 'mutants' or whoever those guys were...where he's in his massively modified batmobile (funny he calls it modified...it looks like a tank) and he looks at him challenging him to come out and fight him and knows that he's up against somene he could die against...

but my favourite bit in the whole comic was batman kicking superman's ass..the way he smugly talked to himself while supes was busy dodgin four specially modified missiles batman had ready for him...and the sonic gun which used up the electricity of the whole city he used against him!!

and the very bloody and violent fight against joker...the new commissioner who's branded him a criminal...man it's so evocative of the first five batman issues (which are genius)!!man, there is so much in this novel!!!! oh by the way...apparently they'r writing a sequel to it now..the main premise is supposed to be that supes has gone completely nuts and become this megalomaniac who works for the US government only and no one else!!!

Hehehe... I remember the Black Kiss run, with each issue in the black poly bag :E The trouble Howards work is so up and down [ no pun intended :E ], like his recent DC Elseworld stuff. Anyone remember his Americian Flagg series from First Comics?

Well WM & DKR did redefine the genre somewhat at the time. But they tend to stick the words Graphic Novel on about anything nowadays. :(

I love American Flagg too. Spent years trying to get hold of all the back issues but I finally did it.

I've been re-reading them from the beginning recently. :)

Actually do you remember Chaykins "The Shadow" series from DC comics?

The Question. Arh a Charlton charactor. :E They did have several series over the years didnt they. If I remember rightly didnt DC do a mini series in the last year based around the Charlton charactors again [ L.A.W. (Living Assault Weapons) (http://www.eranu.f9.co.uk/foxy/comics/images/law2.jpg) ]?

The original Crow book.. an obvious choice for me. :crow:

Good choice, Grace. Luckily I picked up the Crow GN before I saw the film. It's a beautifully poetic piece of work.

As for Chaykin's 'The Shadow' it was probably the work that introduced me to him. A short lived British anthology ('The Zone'? I think it was called) serialised it in this country in a very lovely format. It's a shame the movie they did wasn't half as good as this.

James O' Barr nice choice :E

Well they did do an UK reprint of some Vertigo type stuff, so it sounds like this is the title they popped the Shadow stuff into.

Definetly Young Death. Hilarious. also- why does no-one talk about 2000ad on these pages?

Haven't read 2000AD in years. I gave up on it around the time Dave Bishop took over editing it and alienated some of the best writers.

If we're talking of most wanted graphic novel though, it'd have to be the Complete Zenith.

Without a doubt the best thing to come out of 2000ad is zenith. To think I had an original Steve yowell zenith sketch.God know's what I did with it,I got it at UKCAC 88 or possibly 89.Good taste weasel :)

Have to admit, I was really pissed off when 2000AD went all colour. Steve Yeowill's b&w artwork on Zenith was ****ing marvellous. I really miss his stuff.

Anybody know what he's worked on recently?

oh, me forgot about 'New Statesmen' - a 2000AD production that never went into the comic (bit 2 hardcore for them).

I vaguely remember this back in the days of Crisis (the comic that gave us Garth Ennis) and I recently picked up a full set of US reprints.

Anyone know what John Smith's been up to these days? The guy's a brilliant writer but he does seem to possess a love/hate relationship with comics.
