Surely the past tense would be a little more appropriate...

i.e. I KNEW people who WOULD HAVE done anything to have STAYED alive...

What is his fascination people have with dying is it because they are afraid that there is nothing else?

If there is nothing else after we die, isn't life just really a waste of time...jobs...families..homes...cars etc...why don't we all just descend into a sort of anarchic chaos dooing what we want to whoever we want and not giving a moral or ethical **** about anything??

What are you all striving for, what are you all trying to achieve before you are no longer here? maybe it's to leave your mark on society. Maybe to say "I was a good man/woman" and to leave this earth knowing that you are satisfied with having being kind considerate helful and caring to others.

Remember "Saving Private Ryan" at the end, when Major Miller said to Ryan "Earn this, Earn what these men died for", the scene switches to Northern France and Ryan begs his wife to tell him that he’s led a good life and that he’s a good man - he wants to be reassured that was worth the loss of the others. I think this really sums up what we all want to try and achieve...some more than others.
