View Full Version : Impotant. Read this if you plan to buy an athlon for overclocking.
Just reading some websites this morning when I came across this article.
http://guru3d.com/news.shtml#newsitem968607651,75644,
This is really bad news for any overclockers, and for me since i planned to buy an Athlon T-Bird 750 or 800 in a couple of weeks and run it at 950. Im now going to have to be extremley careful when I buy, to make sure I get a chip with the multiplier pins still in place.
I would suggest that anyone who wants an athlon for overclocking buy it now, before the new chips without the pins are widespread.

No sniper he isnt talking about that, AMD have now removed the multiplier adjustment pins on the back of the chip, so now soldering is nessesary to overclock to more than 15% or so.
They have removed the pins on all chips after week 36.
:(

Only one or two hardware sites have these type of Athlons, so they are still in the minority so far.

You know, there will be one place that can guarantee it'll be overclockable (wouldn't be a whole lot of point if it weren't :)
If it ever does come to be - I think AMD will have done themselves no favours at all. I'll not believe it until someone like Tom has seen it though - he's a right b****d, but he wouldn't bull**** ya about someit like this.
It appears weve been had :)
The pic of the duron with the pins missing was a forgery, done by a m8 of the guy who originally posted the pics on InsaneHardware.
Check it out on guru3d.com
So, all athlons and durons are still overclockable :D
I am a happy bunny once again. :imu:

Telescopi do I know from somewhere?
If anyone want a garenteed overclockerable (to the speed, and for a year) T-Bird, Duron or Athlon classic go to http://www.overclockers.co.uk they sell them pre modded and garunteed to work at a set speed (ie duron 600@900), though you do pay a bit of a premium for this.
They also sell loads of accessories, heatsinks, thermal compound (a must for overclocking), and some really nice cases.
BTW the new durons/t-birds do appear to have pins missing, the picture you're referring to was done as a mock up, when the first reports were coming in of muiltiplyer locked Durons.
I've heard it's Durons/T-birds made in or after week 31 that are locked :(

Or if you played QW in the upper eschelons of the BW league structure in it's last years (well, it's still going - but not properly).
ps. Week 32 Tbird - no pins missing.
TBH, if they were, wouldn't TOM have a picture of one? Obviously he has not, nor knows anyone (anyone trustworthy that is) who has seen one like this.
/me puts his hat to one side, he may find himself eating it later :)
