View Full Version : ISDN-max distance between box and pc?
I'm getin ISDN installed next week and was wonderin what is the max distance between the box and the pc can be.
The box for the second line is at the top of the stairs and the pc is in one of the bedrooms about 4 mtrs away.

Well my bro lives downstairs, the isdn box is in my room. He used a 10m length CAT-5 cable and gets no probs whatsoever, so i guess being 4m away should be ok.
as i remember the max is about 500meteres so u should have no probs :)
ISDN uses standard Cat-5 RJ45 as mentioned above. So in theory there is no limit. No power/voltage is being carried down the line so there is no limit. However I will point out that the longer the cable, the more prone to packet loss/data loss. But then again its so minuet that it's not worth worrying about. Anyway cabling ISDN all the way round your house 5 times is perfectly fine :)
Yep when i cabled mine i went from Box on wall, into basement, along length of house, up through 2 floors to the loft, along length of loft and down into computer room. Had no probs at all, well except when the portable light went out in the basement and i fell through the opening in one of the walls :)
Thanks for the info peeps.

you should get a booklet that will tell you all you need to know as i have just got mine:E
I'm thinking about buying a comp for my bedroom because this one is nearly always in use. What cabling would I need to extend the ISDN line? Can I use standard phone line exension cables?
if you read the rrest of the thread it will tell you Spidery!:E
You need standard catergory 5 UTP RJ45 Cable.
(Network cable) you can buy this from any good
PC store such as PC World. Or if brave enough
(like myself) buy a reel and make up your own
as and when you need it :)
BTW:- Proper ISDN cable ISNT standard RJ45.
It only uses 4 of the 8 cables, so if for
example you tried using proper ISDN cable as
a network cable, you'll fail miserably :)

If you go to a proper PC cable supplier, they will give u flat cabling which is the ideal stuff for isdn. RJ45 is what is usually supplied by places like PC World, but the guy I go to does installations for BT and apparenlty this flat cabling is better suited to it. The other advantage is that cos its flat, if you have to extend it distances, it goes under carpet and you can hardly notice it. I was able to run it under the carpet around the outside edge of the room rather than having to tack it to the skirting board ........ which was nice :D
