Over the last couple of nights, I have noticed that the temperature of my newly installed T-Bird 800 has been increasing slightly. Now I'm not aware of the optimum temperature to be running at, but last night after a couple of hours of Deus Ex, my CPU temperature hit 60 degrees Celsius, and I think that this is a bit high.

At present, I don't have a fan for my ATX case, I am only running a CPU fan (Coolermaster Fan). I'm sure that this sounds really dim, but I don't know which fan at Dabs to order which will fit into an ATX case. Please, if someone has the time could you send me a part number from Dabs, so that I can get some decent cooling installed. I am running with the side off on my case at the moment, in order to keep the temperature down...

Thanks...

First of all mate I would put the side of the case back on as they are designed in such a way to keep the air flowing around the and out of the case. Most Athlon cases come with a case fan blowing in and over your CPU then being blown out the back. As a temporary arrangement get a desk fan and point if at the side of the case, if the temp is giving you a lot of hassle.

Rather than go to DABS see if there is a local electrical store near you, such as Maplins and get yourself a 4 inch case fan. There will probably be a vent at the inside front bottom of the case which is where it should go, make sure the arrow on the fan is pointing in. They come in large or small pin connector varieties the easioest is the large pin as you are more likely to have a spare large 4 pin Power Supply.

Hi

Usually ATX case fans are 80mm.
I would recomend at least 2 if your case will take them, one at the front (near the bottom of the case) sucking air in, and one at the rear,(there is usually a mount behind the CPU) blowing the hot air out.
Sunon ball bearing fans are good (36cfm airflow), and fairly quiet, or YS-Tech fans are even better (47cfm airflow).

Also are you using thermal paste?
A lot of coolers come with a heat transfer pad which is to be honest cr@p, replacing it with normal thermal goo will lower the CPU temp by about 5-10c, and using Artic silver goo will often lower it even further (say another 3-5c).

BTW The T-birds are meant to be safe at up to 90c I think, but a lot of people are running their T-birds at about 40-50c.

I have a Duron 600@800 with a Taisol heatsink/fan that is running at 45c max (it's in a case with 5 fans).

If you want some more idea's on cooling you could pay a visit to the OCUK froums, this sort of question gets asked a lot;)

Thanks for the advice guys.

I'll try to make it down to a shop and get something today.

Unfortunately, I can't install the fan until I get my 300W PSU from Dabs. I am running on a 230W at the moment, and I don't want to ad any more drain to the PSU.

Have a look at that Dragonne. It tells you what temp your Athlon can run at. And get some of that silver paste. The lower you get your chip to run at, the longer it will last, or the the higher you will be able to overclock it.

I forgot to say OCUK have the Artic Silver in stock, it can be found here http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Overclocking_Accesories_27.html

And the fans can be found here

I know they are not the cheapest place to get some parts, but their prices are not bad;)

Thanks m8,

I've just ordered myself one of those 80mm 3-pin fans. I assume I have it right, the 3-pin connecter connects onto your motherboard, right? My KT7 has a connection for a case fan.

Now I just need my 300W PSU to arrive (Dabs have been out of stock for a while :()

I'm running a Duron 650 @ 800 with a CPU temp of 38-39 degrees. Even when I really push the CPU with Quake3 etc, the temp doesn't get above 44 degrees.

I'm using a GlobalWin FOP CPU cooler and some thermal goo to help the heat transfer. I've also got 80mm fans on the front and back of the PC case (front sucking in, back blowing out) as well as another fan sucking the heat away from my GeForce2 card. All this gives me a steady case temp of about 22 - 23 degrees which I certainly think helps.

More fans and thermal goo are the answer m8y :E

I hate to say this, but if you've just ordered the fans from OCUK they also sell the AMD approved 300watt PSU's, I think thwy have them in stock at the moment.

If you can contact them before your order is shipped (keep trying on the phone, they are very busy), they will almost certainly add it to your order.

AAAARGH!!

After an hour of attempting to get through to Overclockers, I finally managed to get through on the phone. I also managed to place the order for my PSU. However, just for reference, this PSU costs £10 more at OcUK than at DABS, which seems a bit much.

So, having placed my order at OcUK, I then try to cancel my order from DABS and, guess what... Their Website is down and I can't cancel it. With my luck, they'll get the stock in of the PSU's and dispatch it to me bfore I can cancel.

The Force is not with me today...
