HELLO EVERYONE :)

Is anyone having problems with the USB modem which comes with your Home user Package? (Acatel Speed Touch)

For some reason my pings have increased if not doubled in the servers i usualy play on :(
I have spoken to someone from telecoms about it,and they say its the actual modem not being able to handle game data quick enough, cause its going through the USB port.
Is he talking sh*te????

I used to have ISDN and pings were never above 90,but now i ping WP UT servers @ 140,Quake3 @ 130-80,Unreal @ 120-60,CS @ 130-50,and its not only WP servers.Barrysworld,Demon,GI,NGI,UKCL are all the same......WTF is going on? :(

Im the first person on my exchange to have ADSL running,so i cant blame contention ratio!!

And another thing........
My ICQ doesnt work :( have to swap to my old 56k to speak to anyone :(

You have ADSL!?
From what you say that doesn't sound promising.
Also the USB version is supposed to give an excellent ping. And programs such as ICQ are not supported on ADSL.

Well for now, i'm sticking with 128k ISDN from what i've heard ^^^above^^^

Firstly m8, congrats. You are the first person in these forums that has got the USB package.

Secondly, WTF?!?!?!

Man that really sucks...

I was worried that ICQ wasn't going to work....but someone in this forum told me it was going to be ok...only the ethernet one would suffer...

And the pings... oh m8, I really hope its something that can be sorted out.....don't forget you signed up for a year...

Shouldn't imagine it's anyhting to do with tthe factthe modem is USB, cos doesn't USB support faster data rates than Serial?? Could be wrong tho?

ICQ may not work because of the firewall issue?

He must be unlucky, 'cos I know 2 peeps in Hemel Hempstead who ping C.S. / U.T. at around 60 while downloading map packs.

what is the spec of your pc coz i was under the impression that usb is quite cpu intensive so if your playing a game and using the usb maybe that has something to do with it?

its nothing to do with usb m8

it has a throughput of 1.5mbps i think

and as u are only 0.5 mbps (512k) then there aint a prob there

also u havent been listining!!

BT openworld AND the 3rd party versions from freeserve and demon DONT SUPPORT NAT !!

that means NO icq file transfer,NO server hosting etc

its all been posted before

Most likely the reason they are giving home users the USB version of the adaptor is that it can probably offload most/all the work onto the CPU, same as a normal software modem, this won't cause problems if you have a fast CPU and playign games or a slower CPU and are only browsing/downloading.

Just a thought.

I could be completly wrong

P.S. what spec machine are you running?

Indeed you are the first in this forum to recieve the home user package. Are you with BT-Openworld or another provider?

My specs are:
1ghz thunderbird athlon with Asus A7V socketA motherboard
512mb
voodoo3000 (waiting for the 6000)
19" mitsubishi dimondtron nf
16x dvd
30GB drive

Cant blame my machine,only had it for 3 weeks,plus i have formated harddrive,done a line test @ 508k/s!!!
can download @ 50k/s plus, surf almost instantly too.But when it comes to game ping it sucks bigtime :(

btw:i thought PCI was faster than USB,no?

Yup, definitely an under specked machine send it over to me and i'll have a look at it for you :E
Seriously though have you tried doing a trace route to see where the bottle neck might be.
In a command prompt type tracert 212.162.240.44 to do a trace route to a WP open CS server, post the results back here I am sure all prospective ADSL users will be very interested.

Just a thought. I was under the impression that the whole NAT thing applies only to the ethernet service as it is a function of the router. The USB package doesn't have a router. So theroretically it shouldn't matter. At least that was the impression I got from the BT guy I spoke to...

Me: I have heard reports that ICQ doesn't work at all on the usb package.

BT: Ah yes, that is because of the router.

Me: But the ADSL service doesn't have a router.

BT: Oh yeah.

FFS. Also regarding the pings...

Me: I have heard reports of pings doubling on the USB package.

BT: that is because of the floating ip.

Me: No it isn't.

BT: It must be that the game servers do not support ADSL.

Me: You WHAT!!!?!???!

BT: Games are not supported on ADSL.

Me: but on your website it says "Great for Gameing"

BT: It doesn't work all the time.

Me: Can you please update your website to "Great for gaming, but it doesn't work all the time".

BT: ummm

So in conclusion, even the Techie guys are not being told why these things are problematic. As usual the problem rests with a lack of infomation.

Hmm this is puzzling me.. the only thing I can think of is the way either the USB modem or its drivers handles data. It sounds very much like it is sending and requesting very large packets as opposed to normal TCP/IP internet packets.

-}FB{-GFuUp can you please look at your MTU settings in the windows registry? I wonder if installing the software that comes with the USB modem has changed that in any way. If you are not sure how to do this then download MTUSpeed which is easily available on the net.

(I could of course be entirely wrong!)

Like i said there is NOTHING wrong with the speed of a USB port.

Right click on MY computer/properties/device manager

go down to UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLERS

right click on the usb port that is being used for adsl and click on the ADVANCED tab

check the box to disable USB error correvtion

see if that helps!!

there u go the first USB ADSL tweak LOL :)

ok, guys, just a quick correction:

A single USB port can handle max data rate at 12mbps.

So I don't why the USB modem is slow because of the port speed. And... you guys know what?

I F**king hate BT

WHy does the ICQ not work?? it's promised to work with the USB modem?!?!?
