just read on a tweaking site that a good thing to do is get new drivers for your network card
as any body done this , and has it made any difference ??

y for me 3-com 905b and no it made no difference at all but was a major pain in the ass :)
The network card is the one part where there is the least bottleneck. I don't think it will make much difference......although I'm sure someone will come along to prove me wrong.

Hehe....yes? You called?
Umm.....I suppose it rarely does any harm to have the latest drivers, but the load that a 512K connection puts on even the humblest/oldest NIC is no sweat for it.
It's like buying a GeForce2 Ultra and playing 2D Tetris on it. Doesn't matter what GeForce drivers you use, you won't see any difference.
Basically, don't expect to see any noticable difference in speeds/pings.

So what is the best way to improve the speed

Move to the states and get a 10mb pipe for what we pay a half mb for here :E
How fast do you want it? and are we talking lower pings or faster downloads?

Like I said how fast do you want it?
Pings as low as 20 and download speeds upto 60kb/sec not good enough for you?

At the moment my average download speed is about 49kb on uk sites. On other sites can be a lot lower obviously ,so how do I speed it up. Don't matter how fast just faster.

Well 49k/sec on average ain't bad but you could try some of the tweaks from this Speedguide (http://www.speedguide.net/) site but you could end up making it ten times slower and in the tradition of all good tweaking back that registry up before hand.
