I've sent a mail asking for more info concerening ping times and online gaming etc so I'll post some more when |I get a reply.

Isn't everyone else just reselling BTs offering and the only company presently offering ADSL independently of BT is Kingston communications in a very limited area?

Yeh I think so but I was just pointing out that they can install it in 10 days for you and are 'saying' that there will be no port blocking.....like I said i have mailed them so I'll post more info when/if I get an answer.......

They're not really re-selling BT's service any more than an ISP is reselling BT's phone lines when you use dialup.

Openworld is just BT's ADSL ISP - if you use a different ADSL provider, then yes you will be routed over the BT network to reach them, but once you reach your providers network, they manage your connection to the net.

Like Gadget says.. all adsl connections regardless of provider travel through BT's IP network which then hit Telehouse to be routed off to each suppliers own network.

I spoke with a very knowledgable chap at eclipse and he himself is using the USB product at home. Some of the things he mentioned were 256k/sec downloads and no problems with any software as their network is entirely unrestricted. He did however say he tried some gaming with Quake but got high latency due to the way Quake handles packets of data.. he wasn't sure about other games.

Anyway from what he has told me I'm inclined to sign up with these guys (he also said unofficially that he thought I could be connected within 5 days, although within 10 days is certain).

Woot! nice work Len I will give you a great big kiss when I get round to shaving my chops. ;-)

I was under the impression that the problems were due to the equipment, which BT supplies to the ISPs. It is reconfigurable but doing this would violate the contract the ISPs have with BT. However, as with most info, take this with a pinch of salt as the source is another customer service operator who probably hasn't been told the whole story.

What we need are more reports from peeps who are getting USB ADSL now. So, if you get it be sure to post here.

Well the way I see it is as the Local loop is still under BT's control and all work carried out will be by them and as the phone line to your house is owned by BT and you just rent it then BT will be the ones carrying the work out there too, wrong/right? so I was thinking maybe how are they going to install it in ten days if BT have put a hold on all non essential work till at least the 22nd?

That's a fair point :-/. The more and more I think about this whole BT-Openworld thing the less inclined I am to place my ADSL service with them. My reasons are as follows:

1. They will no doubt do the normal BT trick of over-subscription and hence poor performance for all their customers.

2. Their technical staff seem about as technical as my granny. Which doesn't reassure that when the service has problems they can sort it.

3. They are affiliated with BT and hence probably have the same right wing policies towards their customers.

4. Lack of communication with their customer base is irresponsible management and unforgivable.

5. Blocking ports.

6. The high bandwidth portal they are creating, which will encourage irresponsable bandwidth usage from many of their users. Meaning that while they are streaming video left right and center, others will suffer degredation in performance.

7. BT suck.

There are alternatives around and always be wary of a company that has to attract customers by giving their services away for free (installation costs). Personally I would rather pay the extra now and get a great service from a decent ISP than pay for it over 12 months with poor performance.

My mind is made up, I'm jumping the BT Openworld ship now as it sure looks like it will sink.

Here's something of interest:

All local loops are under BT's control @ mo, so any third party ADSL offerings HAVE to go through BT, so if they say that they can connect you in ten days, then your exchange would have been upgraded.

Oftel are getting BT to open up their local loops so that third party companies can get into the exchanges and install equipment (eg, all the ADSL gadgetry). However, BT are arguing about what is allowed to be tinkered with and how much access third party companies are allowed. This could be because of two reasons - BT want to keep complete control over their network to be able to exercise some form of control over quality OR they are delaying as much as possible to monopolise further. All you cynics have probably already decided which it is :) however, BT are up for a MASSIVE bollocking off Oftel in the next couple of months if the loops aren't opened up so for those non-cynics, lets believe in Oftel and hope they sort us out.

Conclusion is basically that at the moment all ADSL offerings HAVE to go through BT, so only if your exchange is upgraded will they offer it to you.

len - Keep posting m8, as there is a big market of ADSL hungry peeps here :)

P.s - Check Oftel's site for other related info
