Try Zonealarm from Zone Labs, it's free and appears to be pretty good (i'm using it, it's picked up 3 attempts to access my machine today).
http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/partners/zonealarm/download.html
You have to tell it what programs are allowed to call out as it were ;)
But when you tell it, there is an option to remember the setting so that you don't have to tell it again.
I have it installed on my ICS server (connected to the cable modem) and it lets my brother play CS without any noticeabe difference to his ping.
Ive just installed Zone alarm and its fekin ACE...Ive jst been to a site http://grc.com/default.htm that tests your security and Im mega secure now.....
Thank you thankk you...:D
One more question though......ICQ does not connect now...any way of getting round this?????
Cheers

Hi All
Just installed the Firewall but I can't log onto any servers through gamespy when it runs. It locks up, any ideas.

I think what you need to do is go to the 'programs' section in it, and make sure that it's connection is allowed, and if need be change the setting so that it shows a tick (possibly on both local and internet boxes, and the allow server boxes).

I had the same problem with lock-ups.I got some advice and solved it by allowing Gamespy, quiting GS, then launching the game(HL in this) case via its own internet game launcher.
At this point ZA will ask you to allow HL. Do this and check the remember box.
You should then be able to quit and launch your game via GS as normal.

Thanks guys, worked a treat.
Had this installed for 5 min and it has ejected 20+ scans on my ports.

Crikey thats a lot, I thought the 3 i got from a cable modem user in Luton was bad (if he tries it again, i'm sending the logs to abuse@ntlworld.com his ISP and mine).
P.S. Glad to hear you got it working ok ;)

I hope someone can help me here:
Should I use Zone alarm with ADSL, or is it not necessary? Also, does having it turned on affect the connection in any way? Such as games/downloads etc??
thanks.

I would say get it, and as long as your machine is reasonably fast it shouldn't effect your games/downloads to badly:)

It shouldn't affect your connection at all, as it doesn't send or recieve information, it just catches incoming packets to ports and addresses that shouldn't be getting anything. And the processor load is to say the least, minimal.
I got a bit of a rep m8.
I think a few folks got it in for me.
If you have played Kingpin you'll have heard of Lehmann, he is a bit of a knob to be hounest.
Muwhahahahahahahahahahaha.
Sorry lads, been out on the piss due to Hibs splendid win over Motherwell.
yes you should use a personal firewall such as ZoneAlarm with ADSL more so than when using standard Dial Up.
When suing Standard Dial Up you are allocated a new IP every time you loig on so any potential hackers only have the time you are online to obtain your IP and scan ports and get into your machine. With ADSL you are allocated an IP addy for period of time, although I have heard that this lapses a while after you log off anway so it's not that bad.
ZoneAlarm is oneof the best personal Firewalls, and is only criticised for it's lack of flexibility but who needs it IMO. Turn all the security up to max and ZoneAlarm will reject any port scans, pings etc without telling the destination you even exist, this is called STEALTH MODE, and is excellent.
I hope some of this help.
I would advise everyone who uses the net alot to couple this with a good auto protect virus scanner and you are really well protected.

Just a quick aside, in the past day 'zone alarm' has warned me and stopped about 12-15 attempts to establish a connection with netbios on my machine (i don't have that protocal installed), of which 6 or so appear to be from the same idiot in Luton with a cable modem.
Needless to say abuse@ntl.com have been notified, complete logs were sent and i'm hoping that the bugger will stop it now (or get cuaght red handed as it were).
BTW if you get a warning run 'tracert' + the IP address zone alarm gives you, and it will tell you the ISP involved (thats how i know it was a cable modem user in luton with NTL as his/her ISP)

I installed it about 2 hours ago and I've already got 106 alterts!?! I'm not really sure if I'm using this correctly. hmmn
Another quick question lads
Ive ran tracert a couple of times but as soon as its finished the DOS box dissapears b4 I get a chance to read it????
How do I stop this??
Ta much
Ped
Don't run it from the run command, open up a DOS window
Start/programs/MSDOSPrompt, then type tracert etc etc and it will do a trace (up to a max of 30 hops) and in the majority of times give you the destination, I've been told a good tool to use then is the WHOIS command, but I havent got it so havent tried it.
If you find out where to get it m8 can you email me with the details..

Do a search for 'Visual Route' on the web for an excellent graphical Trace Route of the scanner even showing a map of the world and a link from him to you. You could always download a scanner and see if you can scan your own IP, FTP, Netbios etc.. try http://www.cybercoderz.com ( I think ) for Omega Scanner or FTP Scanner, if not there's a link on my site http://www.gerbilstuntfarm.co.uk as I used to scan IPs for public Anon FTPs ( there's a lot you can find ) or fast FXP capable servers for people to use. Did 2 weeks of it to prove a point that a lot of peoples machines are so unprotected. Out of a over 1million scans there were at least 3 - 4 peeps that exposed their whole pc which you could FTP into and delete whatever you liked that wasn't read only ie. autoexec.bat etc, stuff like command.com is hidden/read only so not possible, but still enough permissions to cause havoc.
Nothing big or clever about it, and remarkably easy, so make sure that a firewall is up before playing games, no matter how desperate you are for a 30 ping :) I'm looking for good firewall's now even though it's going to be a month or so before ADSL comes my way. Also noteworthy is if you go to http://grc.com with standard win2k ( not server ) you'll find it pretty well protected already. I use Win95 on another partition for work, but always dial in and connect via a proxy/firewall, scan's don't even know my ip exist.
Good luck, just look at it like you would a potential burglary :)
Lads Ive had several attempts on my pc today so I downloaded Visual route and its incredible!!!!! :)
The info it gives you is unbelievable!!!! right down to the exact location of the Hacker...hehe })
You can get it at http://www.visualroute.com/
but the only problem is you can only download a 30 day trial version...If anyone knows how to extend this..:) I would be very gratefull...then again I could just pay the bloody money instead of being tight..:)
