http://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.shtml#newsitem969307710,22044, - All because they rushed it out so they could get market share before ADSL came out, bit of a mistake since ADSL keeps getting delayed and is slowly(Slug like) coming out now.

do any of you folk who keep posting the link to this article actually have cable?
or is this just a way of consoling yourself cuz you cant get the service?

I admit I don't have cable and I don't see the point in getting it atm since it would leave me in a worse position when it comes to gaming.

I only see cable/adsl as an advantage of either watching tv, films etc on my computer which I wouldn't do since I have a bigger TV than monitor. ALso for dling large files, hmmm most people just end up dling stuff because they can not because they need to :)

Right, Iv got a blue yonder cable modem and Its great overall,
BUT....

Recently due to rerouting pings have been awfull, unplayable on wp servers (200-600!) with MASIVE p/l (10-30!), downloads still great at 40-80kbps and pings on other servers playable. I have been promised thing will be better than ever very soon but who knows.
When telewest roll out videos to order to ur tv via a special cable modem i think things will deteriorate, but thats a while away yet so i say go for it.
(longest post iv ever done!!)

I'm slightly baffled by that reply - what do you have at the moment? ISDN or 56K?

In my clan I'm currently getting pings thoroughly comparable with ISDN at worst and at best I get 30's om some wp clan servers, which usually brings on an attack of "OMG, your ping" comments. Remember this is an always-on connection, no phone bills, so I can play as much as I like as well.

I can get pings of sixty while dl'ing the full beta of 7.1 for CS at 58k/s which is nice.

This is definitely sour grapes - I play Counterstrike and the betas usually run to 60-70 meg - being able to pull that down in 15 minutes is worth paying the price for cable.

I don't know any of the ISDN players in my clan who doesn't want broad band comms.

I have ISDN and haven't had any problems so far, unlike cable users.

Sour grapes, I don't think so. I can dl the whole thing in 1 hour but I may only need the upgrades, which takes even less time, and then it ends up coming on CD from mags.

Er and how often do I have to do this, not that often at all since they don't release a new beta every other day.

You don't need it right away as the servers have never been updated so your left with the beta and no where to play it, wow.

You're a mug if you got it just for dling one file every month or so for 15 minutes.

Even with my ISDN I can't find any thing I need to dl and even if I do I can leave it on overnight.

Well I am on Blueyonder and even thought they are severely upgrading at the mo I am still pining on most WP servers at 80ish....

Some of my clan members who are with NTL are pining at 35!!!

Now ISDN might be fairly good for gameing but it will never match that standard!!

I was getting a ping of 40 in TFC on the wireplay servers last night :D
Unfortunately that was about the only it would do last night, i was getting error accessing about 95% of sites last night :(

Ah but were you able to get the CS beta 7 (full) in under 45 minutes? ;)

I can get 165mbs in 45mins.

Can't do that with ISDN.

I should know I had it for a year :E

And for games I ping 30-40, whereas with ISDN I was lucky to get 75-80 (I'm in NI btw).

I can get it in one hour, but then again I can get the update in a couple of mins :p

Then agagin I only have to dl it every other month or less :p

I had ISDN for over a year and have had NTL cable now for about 3 months. I would never ever go back to ISDN.

Embattle why are you always prattling on in here about how crap Cable Modems are. Whats the point :P I've had very few problems with my modem although NTL are muppets are the best of times, but even with a few hiccups i am still in a far better position than when i had ISDN. No dialing, always on, dls at 60-80k, pings of 30-50 on Counterstrike. When i had isdn i pinged at 100 (although i know that is higher than most).

Quote of the moment: "By the time C-Modems and ADSL are Established, both will be out of date!"

Well i'll just get the next thing then :) 15 months ago i was swithering whether to get ISDN because cable and adsl were just around the corner. Ended up getting it, when the year contact ran out it was just as i got cable modem, perfect timing.

Also meant to say i was able to watch the Celtic game live on the web at fecking awsome quality (for streaming web:)). Streaming at a constant 75kps was v good, wouldnt have too much hope of doing that on ISDN.

Think one important thing has been left out, PRICE.

Blueyonder is £33 a month (plus I think you can get some free TV channels included with this) with no call charges.

ISDN I believe is £39.99 plus call charges (if you haven't got a free calls ISP).

ADSL is £39.99 + line rental (£9.99).

I would go for nothing else but CM. I know people with cm and there pings are damn good. I think there are many more people enjoying CM then there are that are not.

Plus the equipment is being updated atm.

http://www.ispreview.co.uk/articles.shtml#23 - If you check this article you'll find that ISDN is actually the cheapest :p

There were that many links on that link and I didn't know what I was looking for so I didn't find anything.

Also I was taking the prices from the BT site.

um if you think you won't benefit from a broadband connection, rather than knocking it, just stick with ISDN and be happy. I'd rather have CM than pay ISDN + ISP. Hopefully though, all going well, I'll have a business ADSL connect next month, and personally I can't wait.
