For checking NTL avaliability in your area go here (http://www.ntl.com/cwc-athome/default.asp)

You just enter your postcode and it tells you what services, if any, are avaliable in your area.

Goto http://www.ntl.com if your in a ntl area,go to cable modems and avilability and it will tell u if your area is cabled up,but you have to have subscribe to ntl tv package which is 9.99 amonth, then installion is free for the modem they just run a cable from the wall point to were u want the modem. Then its 20 pound a month for the first two months then 40,but theres remours that the 512k connection will come down to 25 a month....btw the performance at the moment is pretty poor unless your using it in the early hours then its fast,so i would hold on till theve sorted there network out, cause its bloody annoying.
modem costs about 150 and 15 for network card..
