It's my understanding that the home USB adsl will have a dynamic IP address.
Now presumabley if you're hosting a game, when your IP changes the people on your server will be disconnected. So...anyone know how long one is allocated with a specific IP address before it's changed? I heard someone say it was 6 hours - which would be fine really - but has anyone heard anything else?
Thanks.
I've played a lot of games while hosting or while a friend who has adsl has hosted and never had a problem with either of us disconnecting through the ip changing..but then again we've never played for more than a couple of hours at a time.
your ip will change everytime you connect. Although it says your constantly connected obviously if you shut down you have to login again its just that it connects within a couple of seconds rather than actually dialling.
Also although it says you can be connected 24/7, it says in the customer care pack that if you leave your connection totally inactive for more than two hours your connection will time out.
It also says web/ftp/gaming hosting servers are not supported
and the USB modem will not work with Windows 2000
phew thats enuf reading for one day!

You can try using http://www.dynip.com to assign yourself a permanent IP address like gerbil.dynip.com can even assign yourself a port. Worth a look if you're worried and easier to remember than an ip address.
Have fun.
Well I asked two different people and got two different answers. BT said that it changes every 4 hours and every time you connect (boot) and another ADSL engineer said it only changes when you reboot.
Whichever becomes fact, I think games are now coming out (Quake3 included I've been told) that support dynamic IP too so no disconnect when it changes.

...and the USB modem will not work with Windows 2000
It does, I have spoken to several peeps running it through Windows 2000, also it works under Linux which makes me a very happy bunny!
Simple solution. Sit on a Quake3 server in spectator mode, go watch a film or two and see if it disconnects ;)
