View Full Version : ISDN
Just got ISDN installed yesterday and borrowed a BT speedway TA to try.
Dialed up WP direct to check my ping and its exactly the same as my old modem (140ish) WTF is goin on?
IT connects and downloads faster but thats about it.
Is the speedway just cheap spanish donkey hide or am I doin summat wrong?

i got the speedway and get ping of about 40-150!!! so joo must be doing summit rong!! cant tell you what tho:E
The BT Speedway is a bit *pants* but it should still get you a better ping that what you have. If I remember correctly with my Old BT Speedway you have 'virtual modems' on the ISDN Com Port. Try using the standard 64K PPP Modem as apposed to any of the others.
If all else fails replace the BT Speedway with an ASUScom ISDN adapter :) (£28 from Scan) Thats what I did now I get pings between 28-40 :)

Better still, just don't use WPdirect. I've always found it slower than any other ISP. Currently, with Speedway @ 64k via an ISP I get around 70-80 ping on the WP CS servers. When I used WP direct it would be between 120-180.

Nice m8
go on, you know you wanna - GIVE US YER SPECS :)
I've just got an Asus PCI and on various ISP (inc. Barrysworld) I get between 40-90. So would love to sort myself out at 28-40
Cheers m8 :)

Start by changing your default network packet size from 'Auto' to 'Small'. Nearly all isp's these days seem to be using small packets. BTi, Jolt, ukccl, c&w certainly do, cos i tested them myself.
Also, check that your isps support software compression. Most do, but some (like BTi) don't and so you have to make sure in the DUN settings that you not have it setup to use software compression.

Also what game are you playing m8 ? If its any HL mod have you reset your rate ?
All i know soz :O
Nor, I play unreal m8.
I've tried adjustin my netspeed from the default (5000) down to as low as 3000 (was set to 2000-2300 with my old modem) and still no difference, apart from the game play being a bit jerky.
Ch@meleon, I cant find anywhere to alter the packet size anywhere. I've done it before when I tweaked my modem but cant seem to find it anywhere.

Tried altering the MTU values using internet boost and no change.
I also tried different ISP's too and my ping is still exactly the same (WP direct, WP internet, In2home and freeserve).
This is really beginning to bug me now.

Hmmm sounds like a setup prob?
I use the Speedway card. On barry's world, on the motorhead server I get 45/60 ping, going through BTInternet..
As mentioned B4, disable software compression, it screws ya ping..
The packet size alteration can be set here :-
Control Panel/Network/Dial-Up Adapter/properties/Advanced Tab... Click IP packet Size & select 'Small' this setting seems better for online gaming.. Especially when software compression is 'Disabled' :)
I've even created some 'custom' values in the registry, which are selectable at the same screen... I sometimes use an MTU of 512 & 256 this also seem to work well too ;)
Yep, I did hear the ASUS ISDN Card is better than the (Cheap..cough)..Speedway card, but as I pre-ordered ADSL, its not worth me changing now.
