Hi all,

Hope this is the right forum, but I've been toying with the idea of getting a Playstation2 at christmas (to shut the kids up!) and wondered if I could kill 2 birdies with one club.

I know the PS2 is supposed to be able to play DVD films, but is it any good? I'm not looking for super quality as I don't get time to watch many films lately, but it would be a worthy addition to my pro-logic set up (a rather old Ferguson TX27).

One thing that confuses me is this business about "regions". What exactly is the difference between 0,1,2 etc? Is it NTSC/PAL/SECAM or something?

Hopefully, all the DVD's at Blockbuster etc. are of a standard PAL type. I take it PS2 can play these?

Thanks for any help you lads can give - and big smiles to Bapapapa for moderating this forum. Baps, you are spending too much time watching films - it's affecting your golf swing mate ;)

Hello Reg. :)

The PS2 will probably do just fine for casual DVD viewing. Apparently it is not super-duper-double-special quality but is on a par with budget players.

The region numbers are related to the area of the world the DVD disc is released in. i.e. Region 1 = USA and Canada; 2 = Europe; 4 = Australia etc. The PS2 in this country will be locked to Region 2, but no doubt someone will be able to convert it to multi-region if you so wish.

And yeah Blockbusters DVDs will in theory play in the PS2. I say in theory 'cos most of them are scratched to buggery where people use them as coasters, frisbees, sextoys etc. :)

Thanks for that Baps it's appreciated m8 (though how a DVD qualifies for a sex toy I don't know? Hmmm...you have some strange ways! Are you Multi in disguise LOL :E))

BTW - what pic do you want on the members page? Barry Norman or Johnathon Ross? ;)

Indeed the ps2 is said to be on par with budget dvd players. However it can worse than this according to some reviews and is not happy to play some common dvd film`s.This may be fixed with the Pal version (R2).But anyway take it for main its purpose a game`s machine then dvd playback I guess is jst a bonus despite the lacking quality.
