Firstly m8, do you have an AGP slot on your mobo? You'll need to know this cause it will definitely affect what's the best card to buy.
The answer to your question is a resounding 'YES', a new graphics card will definitely help your frame rates. I'd get the best card you can afford, cause even when you upgrade everything else, a good Graphics card will always be the main point for games performance. If I were you, I'd look for a GeForce DDR card if you have an AGP slot. The GeForce 2 cards are faster, but quite a bit more expensive, and wouldn't make much difference on your system.
As to PCI cards, I don't know what the best one would be to get if you don't have AGP.
If you've only got PCI slot the best card you can get is the Voodoo 3000 you will notice a massive increase in quality and speed I've just upgraded a PII 450 from a banshee to a V3 and the 3dmark score went from 795 to 1820 which is very nice indeed Q3A runs @1024x16 average about 39FPS which is nice, but as Dragon says above get a new card, you'll get another year outta that proccy, maybe

or a Voodoo5 5500PCI, if you have a AGP then get the AGP Voodoo5 version, simple :E

Ta 4 the advice guys but as im a bit thick when it comes to computers what is an agp an mobo an how do i find out if i got em?
Open your Case have a look if you've got a white port which is smaller than your PCI/ISA slot that's your Accelerated Graphics Port, You could also check your PC bios settis you will have something making referance to your AGP apperture size

as well as the above can ne1 tell me this *deep breath*
Ok in me pc I have the white slots which i assume are me agp slots. I have 4 green cards 1 under the other in these slots and no spare. the top 2 cards are bigger than the other 2 and have large what look like to me processors hanging off em. 1 I think is me banshee card, 1 me software modem, 1 me ethernet card. I aint got a clue what the fourth could be (sound card?) As none of em are clearly marked how do I find out which is which so if i change me graphics card I remove the right 1?
Firstly an AGP port is normally brown and slightly further away from the rear of the case, and is the first in the row. It sound like you only have PCI slots, as you only ever get 1 AGP slot.
next: to tell which card are which.
the Banshee will connect to your monitor
sound card to speakers
modem to phone line
ethernet card will have a round COAX connector or RJ45 connector(square like modem)on it.
Your best GFX card would be Voodoo5500 PCI, quite dear though, but you will see massive performance incease.
All the best Murchin.....
if u've only got pci, then i'd recommend waiting for the gforce 2 gts and mx to come out on pci, which will be very soon, 2 weeks or so- elsa will be releasing their Geforce 2 GTS PCI card.
HTH :)
