View Full Version : How Hot?
I just started up my Athlon 900 from cold and its at 79F, it quickly rises to 104F and thats the idle temp. Is this healthy???

my duron usually goes upto 100 degrees farenheit when its runnig with games etc.
i think the recommended temp for socket a's is upto about 60 degrees celcius
I think the temp sensor is a bit dodgy, when it reported 100 degrees F I took hs off and chip was only just warm.

i really hope you didnt run it plugged in with no hs/fan :stare:
socket a chips can burn up in just 8 seconds without one attached :O

my overclocked duron runs at 45c when under a heavey load (seti), or about 38 when idle

Jay-Dee is right, never, NEVER run an AMD CPU without the HSF or it will die!. As for normal temps, mine are not far removed from Werewolf's.
Upon startup of the PC the temp is around 25c.
At idle it levels at around 35-38c.
Under load (games & SETI) it can creep toward 43c.
I'm not sure of the farenheit figures, but I'd be concerned if the CPU went above 50c. I think the maximum tollerance is 60c but you do not want to be getting near that.
It hovers around 98f - 107f Is that ok?

Mines idle at 36c at the mo' which equates to 96F. So I'd say that your temps are within normal limits. :E
tfft :E My Old PIII must be burning up then, 100f+ and keeping my room nice and warm

Anyone know how to bloody intall the heatsink on to a socket A AMD athlon? do i use heat-transfer compound on it or just put the heatsink straight on dry... (it has a kind of "sticker" on the bottom of it which i presume is to stop it from scratching the raised portion of the chip) but it's bugging me that it's not a flat area to flat area kind of join....
Is putting heat-transfer paste onto the green raised portion of the chip alone going to be the way to go? (is it just that central peice that's going to get hot?)
Or will paste bugger up the little transistors around the edge of the chip?
hmmm

That sticky pad on the bottom, is a thermal pad. Its not as good as paste, but it will do the job. Put it on and see how hot it gets.
Oh by the way, if anybody wants to know how HOT AMD, say their chips can run.................90 oC, is what tech support emailed a friend of mine with. That was for a 900 Tbird, which to me is way too hot.
