Hi, i've just built my own system, which is running pretty well under windows ME. I have a single hard drive which is partitioned into one 20gb partition and one 10gb partition. I installed WinME on the first partition and have been running it for a couple of weeks without any probs. When I install Win2000 on the second partition, it starts the installation, but as soon as it restarts after copying some of the files across, it cannot find files on the DVD drive because it is not listed in the available drives list. It still shows up in the BIOS, and if I boot to WinME it works fine, but Win2000 cant seem to find it. I've tried changing the cabling, jumpers and all sorts of stuff, but it just wont recognise the drive.
Has anyone had a similar prob or can help me out cause i'm starting to loose me rag :)
Cheers,
Fand

Hmm, Win2000 is a pain for not reading hardware correctly. Off the top of my head, I'd reckon your best bet would be to unplug the DVD drive and do the Win2000 installation from a bog standard ATAPI CD ROM (a 52x is only about £30). At least this will allow you to install the new OS and get it up and running. Once you've done this, you could put the DVD drive back in and try and get it working. There might be a new firmware driver for the DVD to make it compatible with Win2000. I've read some stuff on the OcUK (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000532.html) boards about 'firmware flashing' which might be usefull to you.
You should also try the Microsoft and DVD makers web sites as they may have a new software driver for your DVD drive.
I know this probably isn't the solution you want, but at least a standard CD Rom will let you get Win2000 installed and you can take it from there.

Cheers, i've already ordered a CDRW drive, so i'll try using that (dont really want to buy a seperate cd drive just to get the OS up and running). The DVD drive i'm trying to get running is a Pioneer 16x from OCUK, and i've not had to install any drivers for it cause it seems to be picked up automatically by the BIOS and WinME (it was OEM, so I dont have any drivers anyway). I'll check the sites you've mentioned anyway just incase.
Thanks,

would this work ?
go into winme
then put in the win2000 cd and copy the files onto the other partition in a win2000 folder
then at a dos prompt type d:\win2000\setup
:)
