'T2:UE' - flawed film but it's great to see Sarah lay into Dougie the evil orderly.

'High Fidelity' - John Cusack on top form yet again.

'Knightriders' - A Romero classic given a fantastic picture overhaul by those nice folks at Anchor Bay.

and, um... 'Operation Sex Siege' - (best Austin Powers accent - "That's not MINE, baby! Honest, it's nothing to DO with me!")

So, what little discs of joy have been spinning in your players recently?

Ooo, Cannibal Ferox! Any good?

Latest viewings are:-

Zero Effect - A gem of a movie I've been on the lookout for for the last couple of years. Great Bill Pullman performance.

Any Given Sunday - Audio/Visual overload from Oliver Stone. In the end the script may not deliver that much but the film just bursts with energy.

The Messenger - Not the total disaster it was made out to be and I quite enjoyed it. It suffers mostly in comparison to Braveheart and Besson's other films, and, surprisingly, lacks in emotional intensity.

Existenz - Brilliant Cronenberg mind-****. One of the most sneakily erotic films I've ever seen. The final line of dialogue is an absolute gem.

:)

KRANK
08-10-2000, 12:47
Yeah cannibal ferox is pretty good, quite nasty in places though it's not as nasty as cannibal holocaust, it made a change to watch the film with a decent picture rather then a 3rd generation pirate. I think the company that brought out ferox are also bringing out holocaust, so i cant wait for that.

This week I've been watching ...

T2: UE
Braveheart
The Rocky Horror Picture Show 25th Anniversary Edition.

Rocky Horror has to have one of the best presentations I've seen on a DVD since Austin Powers. The DVD is a 2 DVD set with several versions of the film, a commentary by Richard O’Brien, and audience particiapation track (which regretably isn't particularly good), and loads more stuff. Well worth the £17 from Play.

Should be getting the Jurassic Park box set later this week, and I'm looking forward to the 5.1 sound track :)

This weekend's flicks included:-

The Sixth Sense - I've had this since it came out months ago but have only just got around to watching it. Don't know why it took me so long, it's a damn effective film.

The Insider - Very good film with some first rate performances.

Hellraiser:SE - Good film but the most shocking stuff was in the 'Resurrection' featurette. Clive Barker now looks scary as ****! While Ashley Laurence now looks an absolute babe (particularly dressed as she is in leather trousers). Ooo, and those S&M freaks who suspend themselves on hooks for real! Eeeeeuuughhh!!! :{

Reasonably quiet couple of weeks so I've resorted to repeats:-

Vampire - Not the best Carpenter film ever made but worth it for the gratuitous butt shot and James Woods' improvised dialogue.

Blade - I was shockingly impressed by this Wesley Snipes vehicle. Not perfect but it has some stunning visuals, terrific action sequences and a hero with a wonderfully sadistic streak. Hope Blade 2 lives up to the promise of this movie.

Hellbound - A disjointed film but it does contain one or two excellent scenes. I still don't get why the Chanard-Cenobite manages to pull his own head off though.

The Fly/Fly 2 - I always kind of liked Fly 2 as a sequal but, watching the films back to back, you see its inferiority compared to the original. It really lacks the refined dialogue of the first film. Still, the finale is superb.

Enter the Dragon - Woo-hoo! Nunchukas!!! :)

Deep Rising - Good fun B-movie stuff. Beats the pants off Alien:Resurrection. Plus it's always nice to see Treat Williams in a decent role.

Leon:International version - Superb film that always tugs at the heart strings.

MartyG

This week I've been watching…

American Beauty (R1) - a most excellent film that everyone should try watching at least once.

Braveheart (R1) - okay, historically inaccurate in places - but some brutal battle cinematography.

Enemy of the State (R1) – not Hackman at his best, but a reasonably good big brother paranoia film.

Rocky Horror Picture Show 25th Anniversary Edition (R1) – I don’t think I need to say much about this one J

And finally – This is Spinal Tap (R2)

I really didn’t like Vampire – (hired it from MovieTrak a while back), the thing that annoyed me with it was the way the film seemed hacked together. Some of the editing of James Wood walking towards something, and the camera cutting from the object he’s facing to him walking towards it was particularly annoying for me.

After watching braveheart tonight, I’ve been scouring the web to see if Flesh and Blood (1985 with Rutger Hauer) is available on DVD. Alas it appears that it is not – nor is Hamlet (1990 with Mel Gibson). Anyone have any more info on those two?

LOL  Nice one, m8!

Just watched Pitch Black today myself and it was pretty good stuff. Vin Diesel certainly cuts an ****ing imposing image. Is it just me or does this guy look like he'd eat Arnie for breakfast and then use Stallone as a toothpick?

I know what you mean about DVD Box Office, Still. I've had Final Destination on order with them for three months and it was only sent out this week. A lot of the other stuff has been sent on time but they seem very slow at getting out of stock items filled at the moment.

Magnolia - I've had this sitting around for weeks waiting for me to find a nice chunk of time to watch it. Boy, am I glad I did. Excellent film with some outstanding performances. I even thought Tom Cruise was good. Wonders will never cease.

U-571 - Not as good as I thought it would be. Seemed to rip off too much stuff from Das Boot but without doing it quite as well. Also, I hated the over-the-top explosions everytime a torpedo hit something. That said, the scene where they lay siege to the German U-boat was intense.

Best Laid Plans - Ah-ha! Another under-rated gem. I loved this film. Great cast, great script, brilliantly executed. If you haven't seen it I heartilly recommend you do. :)

Hmmmm I got Pitch Black through my door the other day. Loved the trailer for it, loved the reviews, etc. Then I saw the film ;( It's OK but isn't scary, isn't too original and looks very VERY cheap. I didn't like the way they wrote Johns either and Vin Diesel isn't big enough to play that kind of character. He played the part well however.

I don't know what to get next. I want Platoon but it would be nice to see a film I haven't seen before.

I'm surprised, I thought Vin Diesel really ate up the screen in that film.

This week:-

THE BIG RED ONE - It's been about ten years since I last saw this. Not as good as I remember it but Mark Hamill was excellent in this.

FINAL DESTINATION - Like Casualty on speed. Quite good fun with some nice shock deaths. Was I the only one rooting for Carter though?

GORGEOUS - An atypical Jackie Chan movie this one. Instead of the usual stunt-fest we get a fairytale romantic comedy with a more mature acting performance from Chan and some gorgeous (no pun intended) cinematography. It still has a great sequence with baseball bats that had me chortling like a loon though.

SHANGHAI NOON - Jackie Chan again. I enjoyed this much more than Rush Hour. Not his greatest film by any means but an enjoyable one nonetheless.

FACE/OFF - I still have mixed feelings about this film. It by no means compares to the greatness of Hard-Boiled or The Killer but it still manages to have moments.

AMERICAN BEAUTY - Wow! I tend to hate watching hyped movies because I invariably end up dissapointed. This is the exception to the rule. If you're an adult, you NEED to see this film.

KEEPING THE FAITH - To be honest, the concept of a romantic comedy centered around religion would normally have me running for the trenches. I probably wouldn't have gone near it had it not been for one Edward Norton. What we have here is a RomCom with more emphasis on character than situation. All in all, an enjoyable film.

MartyG
12-11-2000, 20:24
Jurrasic Park and The Lost World - the former being the better. The 5.1 sound track is excellent and the presentation of both discs is superb. Shame about the JP3 trailer, what a waste of time.

Still haven't committed to getting the JP set. While the T-Rex sequence in the first movie is spectacular the second film is a let down on so many levels (actually, mostly script inconsistancies really).

Latest additions:-

FREQUENCY - I took a chance on this one and bought it without really knowing too much about it. What a joy. To watch a very well-crafted film uncluttered by hype or any other distractions. I heartilly recommend you seek this out. It's definitely worth seeing.

GHOST DOG: WAY OF THE SAMURAI - Nowhere near as good as Deadman but not a bad film by any means. It's nice to see Forest Whitacker given a role he can sink his teeth into.

SCREAM 3 - A pretty poor ending to the trilogy really. This whole film is rather flat and unengaging. Highlights are cameos from Jay and Silent Bob and Randy's video warning.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 2 - Turned out better than I thought it would really. Tom Cruise impressed again (****, maybe his time with Kubrick actually paid off!). While it doesn't manage the suspenseful mission set pieces of the first film it does boast a better plot and at least an attempt at reasonable character motivation.

My taste seems to differ a little from the rest of yous...

But this week for me has been:

Cannibal Ferox: Good to finally see this film uncut and with about the best picture and remastered sound quality you ever will see and hear in an italian film of its age. Great for fans of the genre as well, since it has an added audio commentary from both the director, Umberto Lenzi, and also John Morgan, who was Mike in the film. Not one to watch with granny on a Sunday though! :E

Zombie Flesh Eaters: The best of Lucio Fulci's work IMHO. I have had this one for a while, but looked at it again during the week, with the audio commentary from Ian McCulloch. The part where the lovely Olga Karlatos's eye gets impailed on the wooden spike looks better than ever with the crystal clear digital remaster. They just dont make them like that anymore! Another film that granny wouldnt be impressed with! :E

I have Cannibal Holocaust, I Spit On Your Grave, Eaten Alive, Dawn Of The Dead Theatrical Version, City Of The Living Dead, and Brain Dead aka Dead Alive all arriving on
Monday or Tuesday, so that should keep my busy for a few days.

X-Men (R1) - didn't seem as good second time around, a few extras - the special edition will have more.

Casablanca (R2) - Timeless classic, no extras.

ANNA AND THE KING - What can I say? I'm a die hard Chow Yun Fat fan. This film is very good though. Fine writing, sumptious visuals coupled with stellar performances. I sobbed three times throughout this film so I've completely lost what's left of my macho image.

LETHAL WEAPON (DIRECTOR'S CUT) - Pretty good budget DVD. Excellent picture and sound. Seeing it again though, the film doesn't seem to have aged as well as DIE HARD but it's not bad just the same.

LETHAL WEAPON 2 (DIRECTOR'S CUT) - Again, nice picture and sound. I actually have a soft spot for this sequal. Granted they added a little more humour but it's not contrived and lazilly self-referential as in 3 & 4. It's also coupled with some exceptionally bleak turns of events. Plus Joe Pesci's Leo actually serves a purpose here.

THE LAST BOY SCOUT - Topping off my Shane Black triple bill. The picture was a little grainy in places but, since it's a budget release, I guess I shouldn't complain. The film itself is great though and vastly underrated. We have some stylish and exciting Tony Scott visuals, a never better Bruce Willis and some of the snappiest action movie dialogue I've heard. "****! We're bein' beaten up by the inventor of Scrabble!" Great stuff :)

CHICKEN RUN - Brilliant stuff. I really wanted to see this at the cinema but my fickle niece ran off and watched it with my sister and her boyfriend.

GLADIATOR - Looking at the deleted footage I'm surprised at how much gore and violence was cut from the movie.

THE RIGHT STUFF - Haven't seen this for an age but I recently picked up the DVD for a tenner. It's a great movie and really nice to own with such a nice transfer.

Been a while since I last updated here. Most of the following I watched over the Xmas holidays:-

SHAFT 2000 - OK actioner with a great cast. Dissapointing extras on the disc too.

DONNIE BRASCO - Excellent underrated movie. Nice disc too.

LOSER - Fairly dissapointing. Waste of a good cast.

HOLLOW MAN - Very enjoyable (and spectacularly visceral) Paul Verhoeven thriller. Not his best work, perhaps, but definitely up there in my opinion. Nice to see Kevin Bacon (no pun intended) back on the screen.

HOLLOW MAN I like this movie a lot, i've heard a lot of people rubbish it but i thought it was well acted, well paced and some top effects.Pretty cool disc to.

STIR OF ECHOS Bit of a Kevin Bacon double bill thing going on.Really enjoyed the first hour of this one, some great tension building spooky scenes but took a nose dive in the last half hour, seemed really rushed.
Could have done with an extra half hour.

COYOTE UGLY A great popcorn feel good movie. Not much more though. Why no bars like this in my neck of the woods? :(

ME,MYSELF & IREENE Not quite typical Farrelly brothers fare.Maybe they are mellowing with age,it's a little more subtle than Dumb and Dumber which i thought a good thing. It's one of those movies you find somthing new in at every watch(3rd time this).Great disc to, has a nice feature where you can add in the deleated scenes,of which there are a few, to the movie.Trouble is there's a pause and a graphic of Carrey before each one, would have been nicer if they'd have made it seemless.Really i can't see why the sceenes where taken out in the first place.Very funny.

Have to admit it's good to see Kevin Bacon back on the screen (or not, if you're watching Hollow Man).

To be honest, he was never an actor I particularly rated until he came up with the triple whammy of Murder in the First, Sleepers and Apollo 13. Suddenly, he was a powerful screen presence and what happens? Nothing. Wild Things came and went and that's pretty much been it as far as I'm aware. Damn shame and a tragic waste of talent.

Anyway, to my latest viewings:-

EXORCIST III - Probably my favourite horror film. Not as viscerally disturbing as Exorcist but far more creepy. George C.Scott is fantastic.

BATMAN:RETURN OF THE JOKER - Wasn't the same kick as Mask of the Phantasm but a fine slice of on-screen superheroics. Good plot with some cunning twists. I yearn for the day WB realises where the quality in their Batman franchise is and greenlights a major animated Batman movie for the theatres.

ORDINARY DECENT CRIMINAL - Pretty good comic thriller with a flawless Irish accent by Kevin Spacey.

ANY GIVEN SUNDAY With a who's who cast list and Oliver Stone at the helm this promised a lot,and for me it delivers. With in your face visuals and a crackin soundtrack this has to be just about the best sports related movie i've seen.

UNDER SUSPICION Hackman and Freeman battle it out in a tense phsycological thriller. A real cracker of a movie.

THE VIRGIN SUICIDES Very much like American Beauty in style but doesn't quite hit the same high standard.A good debut though for Sofia Coppola.

A Clockwork Orange - This is one of the greatest films I've ever seen (coming up for its 30th anniversary). It gets better each time I watch it. Kubrick's best movie (shame there's no director commentary - and unfortunately now never will be). A satire of the violence, politics and the justice system in society. I'm singing in the rain ...

The Thomas Crown Affair - A remake of the 1968 movie. Starring Pierce Brosnan as Thomas Crown. The story of a bored billionaire who steals artwork for amusement - and then has Catherine Banning (Rene Russo) an insurance investigator play a cat and mouse game with Pierce. Entertaining.

American Psycho - Very violent yet humorous. With Cristian Bale playing the nutty Patrick Bateman who goes on a mad killing spree with axes, chainsaws and various other instrument of death and torture - along with an 80's sound track. Did he do it - or was it all in his mind?

Coyote Ugly - Lots of good looking women dancing scantily clad on a bar - light hearted and worth a look - but not that great.

The Perfect Storm - Based on a true story of a fishing crew who go out to a remote swordfish spot, and then have to negotiate a nighmare of a storm - great effects, but ultimately I didn't think the story was that entertaining - the film could have been half hour shorter and you'd of missed nothing.

FREE ENTERPRISE - Somewhere between Clerks and Swingers but not as good as either. Still worthy of a watch though.

HOUSE OF GAMES - David Mamet and Joe Mantegna on top form.

X-MEN - Borrowed from a mate. Great film shame about the DVD. The extras just seem like brief teasers of stuff they could have put on but none are here with enough depth.

ROAD TRIP - Good for a laugh but not brilliant.

DINOSAUR - Fantastic visuals. Poor story. Who cares?

Way of The Gun - Very good crime/action flick, good intellegent shootouts and not bad acting.

Se7en Platinum Edition - Great film, Fantasic DVD, as good as Fight club. I can think of no higher praise..
