View Full Version : Rookie Patrol
I have been in Rookies the last few nights just seeing what goes on.
I have noticed a worrying trend of newbies being generally abusive and breaching the CoC.
When i was runway rammed,I said that was banned under the CoC they said no i disagree!!!
ok maybe banned was wrong but you see my point.
Also when i asked someone if they read the CoC after getting runway strafed(he missed ramming me) he said he would do to others as was done to him.I said call an admin if theres a problem and got...???? etc.
Also I was told if i wanted to play by the rules then I was to go elsewhere!!!
Now I dont know where rhis sort of attitude is coming from but when they eventually progress into FFA etc then they are going to bring these bad habits with them.
The point is, we, as a community need to try and instill some good manners into the rookies so that we see an end to the rookie bashing posts that are becoming more frequent.
When you started, who did did you take the lead from? The people around you.
Instead of just 'moaning' about them, why not try to have patience with them and try to guide them.I will be around most evenings after 6 if anyone wishes to go to rookie and teach some good manners. We all need to do our bit to ensure that the new people coming through have some etiquette.
This is not trying to do the same as the AAIC btw, im just letting you know how it is in rookie.
Thank you for listening.
I agree.
The ideal solution would be a quiet chat with the worst offenders from someone who is obviously 'official'... word gets around.
However, its very hard to be taken seriously without booting half the arena. We can't use admin tags to identify us as someone they should listen to wrt CoC etc (coz people would impersonate them).
What we need is not a Rookie Patrol, but a Rocky patrol. You know, on harleys with mirrored aviator sunglasses and such. Paging Mr. Estrada!

May I enquire as to how the Rookie arena may be accessed via WP3, kind sirs? The option doesn't appear to be there apart from FFA. I'd be available after 6pm for any advice on the CoC that may be relevant. My first go, so I may seem inadvised.
The rookie arena is only accesible via the old server system or non WP3 if you like using BT/WP dial ups only.
This problem will still be apparent when everything transfers to the WP3 setup.I don't know, however when this will be(cue TK/WPS)
When I went into rookie as Hazlo no one there knew i was an admin and they said why hasnt the admin booted GCP XXXX?
Even though i was sat on the runway.
i gave my ICQ number to people and got blank looks (if thats possible in the game :E)
Perhaps, posting Admin names on the entry screen to AA?and contact details??
i think also there may be cases o blank looks when you mention icq m8
some one once asked me what area code my icq number was and another asked if it was a mobile number !

well going back to my rookie days, i remember it was very difficult to find my way around. The information and rules were plainly there but to find them without help and pointers was not easy.
With wp3 would it not be possible to email the rules and links, to any newbie who downloads AA, this would at least ensure that they had the rules and links to all the information needed, whether they read them or not is another issue.
Just a thought :)
... and a remarkably good one at that Mr. Kite.
Whether GP can do it or not is another question.

Gosh :O Thank you Mr Mebe
I doult it as the download is totally annon, I have already requested that some additional AA info is added to the wp3 AA screen but as yet don't know if they will.

When I started in rookies Ems and Bat's Arse were around a fair bit in rookies :) I had to respect them - when I was too cocky they'd go and get an ME109 and explode me - something that amazed me cause I'd never been in FFA so didn't really know about the 2nd generation planes :) TBH they were so helpful that thee was a really good atmosphere in there.
I just thought they were great pilots and as they were really helpfull I gained a great deal of respect for them.
On 1st entering FFA though I still hadn't sussed that runwaying was bad - it was the whole arena gunning for me for 5 minutes that cured that one...... scared...??. I needed new pants afterwards !!
Mac, cant we have an ickwe bitty CGI form to fill in first including an email address which could also send them details of the club, the club site, the codes of conduct and maybe an FAQ and some nice encouraging words about the steep learning curve and some tips.
It would be a really good way of introducing people to the game. I know we have anon download now but once its all *only* on filemonster (which is web only AFAIK) then a download page could be created with a minial amount of effort.

<agrees with RedKite & Mebe>
however, how easy is to put a false e-mail address in to one of these forms? i know i've done it before with downloads from Real and so forth.

Good point Full :D but if your password was only available via the first email, then they would have to give a valid email addy or is that too simplistic :)
Even simpler, if they give a valid address they get the good information, if they dont they get nothing. If it is stressed that the address will only be used to send you some sign up information very few people would put in a false one. Whats the point?

or just create a hotmail account, get the password then never use it again...
well... i do try and enter the Rookies arena every now and then with AIC tag on and give them a hand... but im limited in WP2.3 as its pretty expensive and i have around 4 hours a week on aa 2 of those is for praccy and matches then i have a few hours for messing around and helping rookies etc :0
so me is sort of on patrol :E but obviously not as much
btw: permission to give rookies a hammering if they hurl abuse around the arena after i give them a few warnings ofcourse :) ? only joking
that only gets them more mad :)
also with the admins thing could there be some think saying
[AAIC] - Air Attack Instructors Corps
in that stuff about admins and FAQ etc

Being a newbie was hellish - I got shot to s**t, and got into loads of hot water about some strange thing called "runway killing" on one of my first foray's into FFA.
eek!

Didnt have Rookies when I started playing. I went strat into teams (didnt have wireview) as a Hurricane. I had also managed to change my physics to "Realistic", something you cant do now through the menus. I crashed 3 times before I managed to take off, and I was always careful about not stalling and going into a spin, but I wondered why noone else had that problem!
Ah... happy days.... <gets pipe and slippers>
Like others, I had a bad time in Rookie. Flying on keys, in F7 view, I got absolutely hammered.
I remember a guy called Cosmo, :E ... giving me a few tips about flaps and F3/F4 views, he was only a POf in those days, and my first proper ratio was 87 deaths and 2 kills.
I swore a lot too... (understandably) but i was guided to the rules, and the gentlemanly spirit of the game.
I was also praised at getting those two kills. Something that meant a lot to me back then... enough to keep me playing the game.
Lets try to guide newcomers if we can...not by bullying, but by encouragement.
I have found over the years, that you can do so much more with the carrot than the whip.
Anyways, I have had too many nightcaps... :emb: I am off to bed.
