Mine's a knackered old Saab 900 turbo (1986).
Bit of a boat but it goes like stink and actually handles quite well considering I can sleep in the back.
So what y'all got then...?

i race karts and i have driven my dads car loads of times so i dont think that there will be any problem there and i have been saveing up for ages, although minidiscs etc have put the old bank ballance back a bit recently :(
any sugestions on what to do or not to do might be useful

What class do you race in Dio? I can't drive yet either. I have done about 10 lessons and got thorougly fed up with the Corsa I seemingly have to thrash to get anywhere. I get told off for taking the racing line too (on my side of the road) and he has decidied I don't know the meaning of slow :E Well I can't risk being told I am SLOW can I? Imagine the embarassment!!. Hasn't stopped me looking at the likes of those Pug 206s and those lovely Smarts. Only two seats though, but it means I don't have to give lifts to lazy non car owning mates! :E
i have got a rotax max, im using a Biesse chassi atm, but i also have a tony kart chassi which is ready to run. i must say that rotax is the best class that i have driven in karts yet - the fastes by far :P i was at lydd last sunday, where do you race/practice oliverotter?
as for cars, i dont have one yet, but i drive me dads omega elite around the pits, which is nice expecialy when its almost empty :) i dont think ill get a corsa - expecialy after the slating they got on topgear last night - a put 206 is probabaly the favorite atm

I race TKM with an aging '96 Gillard chassis, what is great in the wet but a bit lacking in the dry compared to other chassis. I usually race at Warden Law but haven't been up there since about April. I did Shennington in Feb though. I love that bit where you need to brake for the hairpin and the back steps out, then the back wheels take-off over those bumps. :E Bit scary when my brake fluid started leaking out though, hee hee. What's Lydd like? Oh and I'd stay clear of Corsas. (no offence to anyone here who owns one) Numerous times during lessons I have looked into the footwell to see if anything is stopping the loud-pedal going further, plus you don't seem to get much feedback, it all seems a bit...wooly.

A friend of mine has stacked two of these in the wet!
I've got a VW Corrado VR6 Storm. It's a 2.9 litre V6 engine, 190bhp, 0-60 in 6.4 seconds and the Storm is the special edition version - only 500 of them made, 250 in green and 250 in mystic blue, both with leather interior. I've got the blue one and I think the mystic bit is that it's actually purple! Lovely cars though, this one's my second Corrado in a row. They drive great in all weather with fantastic driver involvement, great through corners (it'll widen it's line rather than slide off the road to the extent of lifting an inside rear wheel befoer giving up and spinning off) and exhillerating accelleration.
They're often written up as the best front wheel drive coupe and are very underrated. It's even got a variable geometry rear spoiler (Porsche 911 style, but not as big!).
There's a guy in Austria who works for VW in Wolfsberg who has seriously modded his VR6 Corrado - it's got everything uprated and even has a Porsche turbocharger fitted bringing the bhp up to 483 and goes 202mph! Not satisfied, he's about to rip out the turbocharger and fit a twin turbo system to bring it up to 650bhp. I want his car.

well, that 206 fact sounds a little worrying - so is the fact that you knew it :P
Some of my m8's are turning 17 around this time and i still have to wait till 10 months to drive :( the only good thing is that ill have 10 more moths to save my money up to get a better car :) but knowing my luck the insurance will have risen by then.
some nice sounding cars in here, although tat lada sounds some what odd :P
lydd is a nice track, its basicaly 2 chicains at the end of straights, a wide hairpin, and a hilled section leading in to a 90 degree right and then a sweeping left, another 90 right on to the main straight. its very fast indeed. i know how it feels when u loose your brakes, i was at buckmore, drying track - dryish line , intermediates, on a zip-yamaha, and 1 lap in my brakes failed totaly, but i had so much grip as it was a super soft chassi i was able to do win buy about 30 seconds setting the fastes time on the 11th lap :P who needs brakes when u can scrub the speed off by going sideways in to the corner - my rear tyers were shot at the end :P have u ever been to buckmore?

4 wheels good 2 wheels better as they say........ :)
Yep I have a motorbike not a car (beginning to regret it now summer has gone) a Honda CBR6F4, common as muck I hear you say, but I never had any R1's or Blades pass me this summer
As for a car, well am in the process of buying one and as Monkey says, pugs are a pretty good choice so I think i'll get me a 4door special of the 406 variety, proper little family car (well i'm supposed to be a responsible father.... )
I am turning 30 next year so I'll be trading in for a ZX9r or something, gotta watch that insurance :(
Talking of which I see someone has a brain on there shoulders in here and don't want a crappy escort with a body kit ( ) I know you lot will cringe but dont brush aside Citroen Ax's cheap insurance 55-60mpg and they're nippy for a 1.0, also just think of the savings you make, put that away for a rainy day and that evo6 will be yours by 21........
Oh dear I DO sound my age now.....
heh yeah, make sure the first car you get is rediculously cheap to fix. about half my friends wrote off their first car - one or two quite severely.
hm : 2 litre parent's nissan prarie : obliterated
1 litre dihatsu charade turbo. upside down in a field.
3 minis : one banana shaped, one crumpled, one upside down.
and numerous shunts from people, sliding into walls, traffic in the wet, etc.
and as for bikes...bikes are great ffs. yesterday my mate got a supernew zx6r with 5 miles on the clock (traded in his h reg zzr600). um, until 650 miles he's not allowed over 4500rpm. erm. thats 50mph. hehe, may take some time. then its 6000 rpm until 1000 miles. then its 14500 rpm.

I...errrr...I got the figure from the local news...yes that's right...the local news.:E (ducks back into shadowy back alley)
No I have never been to Buckmore. Well I had a look when I was on holiday, but that was years ago, way before the extention was built. Warden law is too hard to describe though, I think there is a track map on my site. It's very flowing but very hard to find a set up for, its all about a compromise, but it's very smooth. It's worth the trip if you can make it, they don't do Yams or Rotax Junior last time I checked though. Oh and wrap up warm if you come in the winter. We had petrol fumes freezing on the tank once :)
Oooohhhh, yeah, my mum and dad have a Alfa Romeo 155 (P reg, so it has the widened track and quickened steering) and a Sierra. No chance of being insured on the Alfa though. :bigcry:

Lovely car, truely.
I don't know what to do next year trade in the 306 for a new Pug, a Beetle....yes I think they are ace, a Golf GTI, a bike (bleedin costly to do this and have a car) or keep it and buy a Kart for some amateur racing. Decisions, decisions.... Someone give me advice!!
Has anyone driven the new Beetle that can tell me what they are like??? I have not had a test drive yet so I'm not too sure.
i saw a rumour on some page that the 2001 hayabusa was going to have less power. erm?..and Khefru, at motorcycle.com (um great url) they've an onboard mpeg of a busa doing 9.9x/142 in the qtr. 9.9x!! quite entertaining watching that speedo once they get traction.
a comical/subversive site : http://come.to/need4speed
don't take this the wrong way, i don't mean it in an agressive way : do you VW chaps find your suspension too soft, kind of not tuaght enough ?
-reaper-
09-10-2000, 15:27
VW's that I have experience with:
Polo (old shape) - pathetic suspension
MK2 Golf GTI - spongy suspension
Scirroco GTX - Good cornering, leans a little too much without rollbars
MK2 Passat - nice and soft ride, not good for racing
Old Beetle - I have nothing good to say about these things
New Beetle - too soft
New Passat - comfortable, verging on the relaxed side
16V Corrado - firm, but still comfortable, very responsive
VR6 Corrado - as above
The only thing wrong with the Corrado is the big gap between the 15" wheels and the wheel arches. It cries out to be lowered and larger wheels put on.
I haven't owned all of these cars, by the way!

Hayabusa eh? That certainly is an awesome bike, I had a little shimmy with one not long back in Maidstone on a roundabout, I took him on the inside (he looked a tad uneasy cornering..lol) but once we were upright, he went past me, on the nearside lane, wheelie ahoy!! Flash bugger!
How long do you get out of a back tyre Khefru?? I heard 1800 miles is the best you can expect...yikes.

Sort of linked to the last thread....at Donnington Yesterday they had an Evo7 flying round the track between the Superstocks and the 250's. Impressive I'll say.

speaking of evo6s...me and my mate 'happened to be travelling the same direction as one' in his caterham. It was wierd watching his wheels in the corners. you could tell the black boxes were up to something. not as impressive or as fast as 'following' the f40 was, and comically spotting when he came on boost.

Got a 306 GTI at the minute but I want to get a new car. (May go for a new 306 as they so good in corners and soooo damned fast, but not dangerously fast if you catch my drift :E )
I'd love a big bike to be honest but insurance at my age is ridiculous and would mean paying for a car and bike + two insurances. No thanks just now. So a new car it will be I think and the Beetle seems to be on top at the moment.
spacecowboy
09-10-2000, 16:29
Yeah gotta say insurance these days is getting nasty for bikers particulary if you own a big bore bike i.e. R1, Blade etc. etc. my quote of £505 a year isn't horrendous but I would like it to be cheaper, after all I'm 29 and the bike is only a 600cc :(
I like 306's is it the 6 speed gti version? Even the turbo diesels look smart :) (Can't believe I just praised a diesel....)
Monkey Fool
09-10-2000, 16:53
Yeah it is the 6 speed, and the box on the little sod is ace. No complaints. Hmmm shall I stick with these.
I had the 306 D-turbo before briefly, and they are smart for a diesel.
My reason for thinking VW is the resale value and the reliability they are meant to have + the Beetle just looks ace. I would go Golf but the new shape is really boring except the VR6 version but thats like £24,000.
I'm only 24 and with a years biking experience I won't bother to list quotes I've had for even the likes of VFR 400. Bleedin Stoopid.

It's a shame that VW don't release an official VR6 version of the new shaped Beetle, now that would be nice :)
If I remember rightly me bruv said that was his only complaint that the 2.0i was gutless, and he'd prefer a turbo diesel instead (same peformance more economy..lol)
My mate who has the EVO6 had a VR6 golf before that, blooming lovely car, he spent thousands on the bugger, TSW Hockenheim 17" alloys, 1200 quids worth of suspension (Bilstein if me remembers correct) god knows how much on stereo kit, the only thing that was standard was the engine.
Now he has the EVO pushing around 350 - 370bhp (depending on atmospherics...lol) with 18" alloys (some rally make or other, he got them from Mitsubishi ralliart) I drove it round Cadwell park at a track day late March this year and believe me this is quickest thing A to B, no wonder Tommi Makkinen has one 4 WRC's in it! :) (or was it 3??)
-reaper-
09-10-2000, 21:39
I did hear they were going to fit the VR6 lump into the new beetle, but they dropped the VR6 in favour of the new V6 which produces more HP per litre than the VR6 but is strangely slower... Should still be fun in the beelte though - it's supposed to go 0-60 in about 6.8 secs!
MF -I didn't see the turbo'd busa in MCN, but saw what I presume was the same one in Superbike Mag. 348bhp@10,000rpm!!!!!!!! Thats just plain silly :naughty:
SCowboy - Yes it is a bit lumbersome round the bends, and a good rider on a 600 will leave me, but as you say, as soon as it hits a straight bit of road and I open the throttle -WHOOOSH!!!! It's barking! :)
I have heard horror stories about them chewing the back tyre in 800 miles if it's ridden hard, but I've done 1500miles on mine and it won't need changing for another couple of hundred miles! Mind you 1000 miles were carefull running in! Gulp! Me bank manager will be twitching!
As for bike insurance, it is very expensive now! Mine costs me £950. :bigcry:
spacecowboy
09-10-2000, 22:49
Gulp indeed! And me Mrs moaned at me when I could 'only' stretch 5000 miles out of my back tyre.....
I met a guy with a turbo'd Busa back in the summer at Paddock Wood Motorcycle City, he had his fairing removed, and an intercooler strapped across the front width ways, looked piggin awful, but was the strangest bike I have ever heard, apparently his original fairing was being modified to allow the intercooler to sit behind where all the electronic gubbins used to be located, and was having a different headlamp fitted to, to save more space.
That was running at 0.6 bar and pushed out 260bhp, but could be pushed to just over 1.0 bar to produce nearly 330bhp.....mad

Blackbirds are fast as Fluff. They were the fastest roadbike post ZZR1100 but it has now been surpassed by the Hayabusa.
The Accord Type R's are meant to be the next step down from a Honda NSX hence the popularity. (Then again thats what Honda would say!!) I will only be getting a second hand one anyways but theses are still more than I want to pay.
/mmmmmm..... VTEC Engines
the only thing with vtecs is that there's something nice to doing 100mph and not going over 4000rpm. the high revs, low weight, low torque idea is fine in a caterham, fine in super in a bike, and amazing in an f1 car, but in a saloon? case in point, integraR, 125mph, 8000rpm.
having said all that, i'd love to had an lsd in between my front wheels, and there is still something appealing about accordRs.

I've just found out that the supercharger that Nik Saran Racing fit onto the VR6 engine has dropped in price from £4000 to £2500... now I'm really tempted!
My VR6 is 190bhp, 0-60 in 6.4 seconds as standard, but with the supercharger, it'll be 265bhp, 0-60 in 5.4 seconds with the torque increased by 30% (from an already torquey engine)! A new set of cams will apparantly drop the 0-60 time a further second...
Hmmm... 0-60 in around 4.5 seconds...
What do you reckon, guys? Should I do it? :)
