Alz And Stickman
Hope you can help me here
I am going to fly with you this Saturday (provided i dont get called to work again, which i wont) but I was reading my FS2K pro manual and reading about VOR Navigation, I can navigate say from Bristol to Cardiff which is only a 5 minute flight using IFR but when i close in on Cardiff how do I actuate my ILS, do i have to type in ILS code for Cardiff on closing on airport or do I input it on Comm 2 and then switch to comm2 on arrival, this may sound dum but it is realy annoying as it does not say in my manual (unless i am reading it wrong)

Lo m8. Glad to hear you should be able to join us on Saturday :)
Its not a daft question - the manual is a bit vague on IFR, but theres not much too it. As you approach your destination you want to be at about 3000ft in order to intercept the ILS localiser. If you have NAV1 and NAV2 in the aircraft you are flying keep NAV1 tuned to whatever VOR/NDB you are using to navigate to the area of the airport, and put the ILS frequency in the NAV2. You can get this frequency from either the map view, or more easily from FSNav. Its listed in any flightplan you create in FSNav if you have selected an ILS runway as you final waypoint. What I then tend to do is tune in to ATIS freq (if there is one) for the destination airport and set the QNH (airfield pressure) on the altimeter if using real weather, and get wind speed direction info etc to make sure you're using the correct runway. Setting the airfield QNH means that if FSNav lists a runway at for example 47ft AMSL (abve sea level), your Altimeter will read 47 when you touch down. Handy. :D
But back to your question! Select test (I think thats what the buttons called anyway - bad memory!) on NAV2 and you will here the morse code for the ILS identifier. You can get the code again from Map view of FSNav. When you hear the bips and bahs you know your captured the localiser. At this pointg you can then swap the NAV2 (ILS) frequency over to NAV1. The other pointer is on some VOR instruments the little flags within the display will change from raster bars to TO/FROM.
Intercepting the localiser will be a lot easier if you try and do it at about a 45 degree angle. The vertical bar on the VOR wont move across the display so quickly as if you try instersecting the beam at 90 degrees.
Hope this all helps, and sorry to go on a bit. If you still have any questions just lemme know.

Don't worry 'bout FSNav - its quite easy to get to grips with and we will have time to make sure you're set up ok before departure. As for WP3, not sure m8. Watch this space I'll try and find out and post b4 tomorrow afternoon. If you've got both installed you'll be fine (I've got to d/l the latest version still - better do that tonight..)
All the best
