Lo all,

I want some of that nice surround sound but have No money

Theres no way I can afford dolby digital or DTS but I have found a pro logic setup for 80-00 (Goodmans 5 speaker)

Is pro logic any good and how does it differ from the digital formats? I mean, with pro logic do u actually get surround sound or is it just normal sound through five speakers?

I will have a Hitachi 28" WS and Matsui DVD110...I know its probably a crap question but can anyone tell me if this setup with the pro logic above would be any good or would I be wasting the last of my cash?

Thanks all,

TV and DVD come tomorrow and I can't wait to see some Austin Powers 2 action! :)

i got my prologic thing back in, er, 1991. a few days ago. There's still poo prologic and good prologic. The one out of my mate's new tv, for example, was still pants compared to my 9 year old pioneer/bose/whatever setup.

differences between prologic and 5.1/dts..

prologic does voice at the centre, er, other noise L+R at the front, and 'mono' rear - in that you can't have a sound effect coming out of just the rear left, it has to be both. However, as its just done with filters (I guess) not digitally encoded, you will get ghosting. voice will come out the sides, and general noise out the front, etc. infact, calling it a voice channel is a silly thing, it just highlights those voice-type frequencies, i guess.

5.1 also gives stereo rear, so you can appreciate some guards firing from the back of one corner of the room in the Matrix, and a dedicated subwoofer channel too. My prologic amp has one of those too, but again filters, etc, not some mega nice digital solution.

stereo rear is the thing that sets it apart, imho, how much better it is is down to you.

dts has a mega high bit rate too. it was something like 384kbits/sec, where as DD5.1 was much less (96 odd?). Theoretically it'll sound better, maybe. I don't know tho, as you might need to have ears like a cat.

generally, I'd say keep on saving. Prologic is soo old now, and the performance you'd get from an 80 quid goodmans jobbie might not be what it should be.

I'd say keep saving. Pro-logic sounds like an asmatic hamster compared to Dolby Digital 5.1.. You can get the digi theather for 200 quid.

I'd argue that my prologic thingy sounds better (stereo rear aside) than that 200 quid videologic thingy (my bro's got it). but then again the prologic thing cost more. and as with all of this type of stuff, you seemingly get what you pay for. or something. er,. i dunno.

save up, get a nice 5.1 solution.
