Having only recently configured it too work (just :)) I wanted too play it but I'm absouloutly dumbstuck about what character too use
I played BG with a fighter and Also Diablo 2 with one and too be honist all this hack and slash is getting abit dull although its still fun sometimes, juust not all the time
So what character shall I have?, I'd prefere a human male, and I want too be able too fight close up, AND learn new spells like a mage (not just healing and defensie spells) ...well it does seem a shame that the Black Isle boys should go too all these lenghts making fancy spell graphics only for me too go slicing and dicing anything that moves ;)
So what do you reckon?..Ranger?..I did try that once and got too lvl 10 but I was un-impressed with him.

Paladins and rangers will be able to cast druid/clerics spells at higher levels, though you could have a muiliclass fighter/mage or fighter cleric or druid depending what race you are, though party members will be able to cast spells if you want to just see them.
Human fighter, dual-classed to mage, is a good one. He'll have plenty of hit points, though he won't be much use in melee until his mage level surpasses his fighter level.

NO IT Has to be the Fighter/Mage. If it looks a bit tricky, take off your armour and fire all sorts of mind boggling spells at your target , while letting Minsc and other cannon fodder do sword to sword combat. With the added comfort of being able to go toe to toe with rather nice magical weapons when you want to.
I must say i was really tempted to go Fighter/Theif/Mage.
Druids look good,
Paladins , TO Lawful good for my liking, also checky swines have some nifty posion resistance.

I must say I'm not over-fond of druids. If you do get one I recommend a multi- or dual-class with fighter, so he can actually wear armour that protects him.

try the monk its ace.
as u start at level 7, you can kick 10 shades of muffin in hand to hand, you have loadsa different resistances and save vs bonuses.
and u can cast some spells.
only draw back is the lack of armour, this is offset by ensuring you have a high dexterity, and your amour class improves by one for every two levels, (+ the odd magical adornment).
as said above a good combo is both fighter/mage, or fighter/cleric.
on another note entirely, with the wealth of classes available i wish you could set up an entire party aka iwd bah! but at least playing as diff. classes adds to the replay factor.

You can set up your own party if you like - start a multiplayer game and assign control of the characters to yourself. I've not done this myself though, as I'm pretty sure you'd miss out on a lot of the quests and the storyline if you did.

nope u r all wrong, the sorcerer is da best!!
hes get real powerfull at later lvls and his ability to cast any spell in his repetior at any time makes him prepared for anything. u could always choose bvetween doin say 6 firballs or 6 chain lightinings, or even 6 lower resistance which has no saving throw, hell even goloems will be affected with magic after that.
he can cast more spell than mages but is only limited to those he knows ( u get to choose from the whole available list). so no searching for those hard to find scrolls.
there also spells that turn yo mages into warriors for a brief time. Dont forget you can wear eleven chain or robe of the arch magi which gives decent ac. AS well as prection stuff.
theres a +4 staff available in the shops, as well as staff of fire, air and staff of magi. theres a cloak that reduces your casting time by 4 and rings htat gives you extra spells. those who use spell sequencers can let loose say several firballs instanly when its stored.
u can have a familiar too. people who play sorceres will likly know their spells inside out, but they are really fun to play.
I've seen poeple who create sorcs and mages do it all wrong, U still need 18 str, 18 dex and 18 int, trade wis and char and put any spare left into cont. if u cant get a high enuff score you should really reroll.
LOL finally a sensible remark by sf! :)

err dont sorcerers need charisma for the amount of spells they get?
Plus I made my mage with his wis to so his wish spells work 8)
oh yeah imho mages need 19 int, otherwise you just cant memorize all the spells you find, and if you memorize some of the crappy ones first you end up half way down **** creek coz you cant mem the best spells you find later in the game. So get importing your 19int mages from BG1 coz there are no books that raise stats that I have found yet.

Nah importing chars from bg1 that had their stats raised is sorta cheating:)
All mages can learn all the spells and here's how you do it. Gnomes get a +1 to int and a -1 to wis so they could do it.
For those taller folk, just drink a potion of genius which will raise yo int by +4 or so, taking it well above 19 tempererily, then just get yo scrolls and write away. I think you have 100% of writing it sucessfully with a high int too.

I dont see why its cheating tho, you are supposed to be playing the same person you were in BG1 and the stat modifiers were easy enuff to find..
actually the more I think about it is'nt using a potion of genius cheating even more? its a short term int raising effect so really you should lose the extra spells when the potion wears off....

I wouldn't say either way is cheating. My imported cleric has an unmodified wisdom of 21 from all those tomes :) Also, if you temporarily become a genius from drinking some foul concoction, and that lets you comprehend the complexity of a few new spells enough to write them in your spell book, then surely they'll stay in the book even when you return to your normal moronic state :E
