View Full Version : Saturdays Flight
Although we had a problem connecting with WP3, which we hope to correct soon, I think we all had a good time last Saturday. I did. Thanks to Stickman for the flight on Saturday night in the dark. It makes a big difference to flying when all you can see is the runway lights and have to rely on your instruments. Mind you with winter fast approaching in will be dark by late afternoon. Lets hope that we will be able to do a night flight again soon.

Cheers Alz - Saturdays day and evening flights were both great fun. It was good to have an additional pilot along in the form of Deano777. Though just a short hop from Cardiff to Heathrow it demonstrated nicely all the principles involved such as navigating with FSNav, the effects of real weather and the degree to which the flight can be as automatic or as manual as you wish. Night flights are always good, (especially impromptu ones!) and the prospect of a winters 'interesting weather' and the shorter days should make for some challenging flights over the next few months.
As some of you may already know I am in the process of writing a webby, which will feature, amongst other delights(!) an FS2k section. Plans include a post-flight review our WP flights and some screenshots. As soon as its up and running I'll add a link to my siggy. It is my first attempt at such an undertaking - so be patient, I will get there eventually!
Til next time

Here Here guys
Thanks for the flight and i am looking forward to this saturday when we can do it again, i should be available but as u know im off to oz on Monday but i will do my best to make sure i have everything done by then so we can fly, maybe a more challenging flight will be apt, for me a challenging flight would be something like landing in an opposite direction to what we headed towards airport, i.e fly from cardiff to LHR but land on runways 27 instead of 09, anyway see what you can concoct
cheers guys
Deano
p.s. I'm up for more of a challenge if you so wish:E

FSNav can do some weird things if you ask it to land on a runway opposite the way you have arrived from (eh?) - usually resulting in a close encounter with the ground as it tries to turn too sharply at too low speed. Its not a prob tho - you can either add a couple more waypoints of your own to bring you round into the circuit, or you can go to manual and finish the approach using the ILS, or visually.
One challenge I quite like, tho you have to be in the right mood to do it, is to try and follow an actual SID/STAR - or instrument departure/arrival. I've got loads of these from Jeppessen on CD and paper, if you fancy a go I can send you some. Get it right and its quite satisfying to know you got off the ground and onto a particular airway in exactly the same way as a commercial pilot. The link below is for a tricky one I've posted before, but it shows you what I mean...

Now get on with that packing! :D

Isn't there a big collection of Jeppesen stuff on the FS2000
cd, disc3 me thinks with all that other stuff and realistic sounds, or does that just come with the PRO edition?
On a different note, you mentioned you had Airport 2000 version 2 with Heathrow etc. Do they concentrate on a certain area or will Heathrow be on version 3 aswell. I really want Heathrow cos nearlay all my flights are to or from Heathrow. If you could tell me i would appreciate it.
P.S, does me need to connect with WP3 or will the FS2000 proposal still appear in 2.30 as i have real connection problems with WP3 (i.e. it drops out every 30 to 60 seconds).
Sorry for the bother!
Is any of you in Virtual Airlines, me joined BAV recently and just wondered if you flew for any.

Lo m8 - I have a feeling there may be some demo simplates on the CD, but not many. To get the full kit you need to buy one or more of the excellent Simcharts cds from Jep. They are good value for money, at a fraction of the cost of the real plates, and with the only real difference being that the sim plates are not revised.
Airport 2000 series feature different airports in each volume. They are designed to work either alone, or link to each other. ie the adventures (flights complete with ATC control can take you from an airport that features in vol 1 to one that is in vol 2. Heathrow is in Vol 2, along with Miami Intl, Chicago O'Hare, Nice, Schipol and some others. You get a few planes too but these aren't the best you'll ever find. Be warned tho - frame rates WILL suffer, but nice to have a printed plate of Heathrow by your side, and taxi away from the gate to a marked holding point, before taking off. :)
As for WP3, I understand work is in progress with regards to fs2k. Watch this board for any news.
All the best

Do the frame rates suffer as much with purchased software such as Airport 2000 as they do with downloaded 3rd party software?
I downloaded some Gatwick scenery which was supposed to have only a low influence on fps. it took it from 19 to around 8-12 fps. Then i thought if it's going to suffer it might aswell look the part so i downloaded some really detailed stuff which only took 1 more fps off the fps with low detail scenery! (that make any sense?)

I have joined a virtual airline, this being Qantas Virtual Airline and i must say it is very good and gives a new direction into flying rather than just flying aimlessly around (not that this is what we do Alz and stick) i mean when you are flying on your own, the seriousness of QVA appeals a great deal to me as you are dealing with professionals who fly 744's for a living, anyone wanting to join can email me for a link to their webby
Cheers

p.s. where can i buy a copy of these airport add-ons? as my local Game, EB, PC World etc dont sell them
[Edited by Deano777 on 11-10-2000 at 11:08 PM]
Yeah, i know what you mean, both Game in Newcastle and Sunderland didn't have them, Dixons is a waste of bloody time and PC World is hopeless. EB in Newcastle is crap! Gameplay say that if they ain't got it in there catalouge or in stock then they can usually get it so you could try there, thats what i'm going to do.
Could you give me a link to Quantas VA, i'm a member of British Airlines Virtual and was thinking about joining another. Cathay Pacific Virtual looked good and CP Air VA looked promising but me is a bit patriotic (at 17 this could prove to disfunctionality at a later age apparantly)!!
