Is there any body out there that can help me please? i have just purchased a tiny computer and it came with a software modem when i specifically asked for a hardware modem! After many a conversation i managed to get a £40 contribution for an external 56k modem. I purchased a creative labs modem blaster thinking that it would be the dogs *.*.* but when i connected up last night it gave me a reading of 11520bps.
Obviousley this is the sending speed so i had a check on the bandwidth speed test page and it was not good! I found i was connecting @ 29000bps and 2.9k.
Any ideas how i can change the speed on the tellies in the bottom sys tray and why i am only connecting at this speed because i play all online games through bt and this connection is pants!!!
Any help would be gratfull.

I'm no expert m8y, but I guess the figure you got was 115200, not 11520. Reading the second figure made me think you might have the "maximum speed" set too low on your modem's com port, but 115,200 is more than ample.

Furthermore, I seem to recall the figure does not relate to how "fast" you are connected to the internet, but how fast your processor sends info to the modem itself. If anyone knows better please fell free to correct me!

The first site link below suggests 115,200 is good for 56k modems, but says 57,200 may be better (more stable?). It has lots of other good advice on tinkering with settings (but after YEARS of tinkering myself I'd advise you to steer clear of the scripts/initilisation strings section. Never, ever worked for me!)

This site is also worth a look...

I have a very good Pace Voice modem and find I get a BETTER gaming connection when the "tellies"/linked computer logos show I am connected at 44,000. If I get "115,200" I'll often reconnect just to get back to 44,000!

Out of curiosity, I've just run a test at this site...

http://computingcentral.msn.com/topics/bandwidth/speedtest50.asp

which revealed:

Your line speed:
27.7 Kbps
3.4 K bytes/sec

I get very good gaming pings with this (for an HPB!) and more often than not it's down to your ISP, where you live and the server you are playing on.

Not sure if you meant you were on a BT phone line or a BT ISP, but BT's ISPs (free or paid-for) are notoriously poor for gaming. I'm with Claranet and cannot recommend them highly enough. A freebie ISP will always give poor gaming pings, but if you're willing to shell out £12 a month Claranet offer a great connection and free weekend calls.

One last thought...have you downloaded the latest drivers for your modem. Is it flashed to V90? Both of these can make a big difference.

Anyway, good luck :)

Aha - I knew I'd find this link somewhere on the boards...

I went through this step by step and it gave me the best connection I've had in five years online. Great for gaming, but does tend to slow down Net surfing a bit (no great loss!)

Best of luck again!

PS. You might be better off posting in the modems section next time. We're all ADSL wannabes in here!
