View Full Version : SideWinder GameVoice
From the adverts and from what I've read about it, it looks kinda spinkee.
Anyone got it yet?
erm... I think the entire bong clan have them now... I've had a little play and it seems pretty good...
I have the strategic Commander and it rocks.
Its an excellent little piece of hardware that lets you preprogramme shortcut keys into it.
So for example in AOK you can program one button to select an idle villager and build a house. this before would have taken 3 key presses. ow one click and house is started:).
Its improved my game no end. But this is only for players that want to be the best. If you dont get this you WILL be left behind in the battle for the best player accolade.
Still not lost a game yet , since i started using it :).
Gameplay have a really good review on it here.

I got the Gamevoice ages ago and can heartily say it does indeed rock. Although I only use it for Admining HL I setit up for Starlancer the other day. I feel like Clint Eastwood in Firefox with all da spangley displays sliding in and out of the screen without touching a button :E
well worth getting, haven't had time to try on the other games yet but it's invaluable if :
1) you're lazy
2) you have wayyyyyy tooo many keyboard commands to remember
With HalfLife nowadays Option2 is pure fact m8 :)
however I think I'll get it because of Option1 :E

£38.99 from software first, extremely reliable company ive used since the heady days of the amiga.
No disrespect to Monsieur Gameplay but ya can save a few quid quite often if you go elsewhere.

Oh yes, forgot about that. Good point!
Just a shame that WP3 is about as stable as a pissed up blamange thats had one of it's legs amputated, and has an inner ear infection. (Well, as far as AA goes it is.)

Flyingbrick, you probably already know this but just in case you don't, read this (http://forums.gameplay.com/showthread.php?threadid=186695) thread as it has some information on what is wrong with wp3 and AA and what is being done.
DM
Ive heard a rumour that its USB only, can anyone confirm this?
Theres no need for anyone to go on the defensive either, im sure gameplay are more competitive on other products. In the interest of saving money which im sure everyone is for i felt it would be of use, besides its only information, im sure plenty of people will not go and buy from an unknown company (to them)on the back of my post. Ive spent the last 4 years buying games from gameplay so its not like im kicking them in the teeth really is it.
Anywayz, USB anyone?
Cheers
It does indeed use USB. I bought mine yesterday (from Game ;P) and I've yet to install it. But it does look like a seriously sexy bit of gear. Can't wait to try it out.

It's USB only and the Game Voice software for it is Win98 (and above) only...

So does it work on win2k?
Thanks
DM
Don't see any reason why not.
Won't guarantee it mind ;)
DM check out http://www.gamevoice.com
methinks its not to happy with Win2K judging by
http://www.gamevoice.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000354.html
i beleive it requires the advent of DirectX8 for it to work with said op system.
I ordered mine this morning i guess its use wont come into full effect until you play with others that have it too.
Cheers

Thanks SUN GOD, hopefuly won't be too long, although I not sure if I fancy being an early DirectX 8 user.....
Thanks Sar, you made me :), oh and get back to the Q2 forum they are missing you there, well they won't admit it but I am sure they are ;)
DM
np m8 :)
how about a database of gameplay and gamevoice users? I doubt i would be alone in wanting to speak to peeps from the UK and GP community rather than some crazy l33t Ha><0r kid from the St8s. :)
I think the ingame teamwork that this could could provide is phenomenal. Im soooooooooo excited, roll on mr postman! (not literally of course)

Meh gamevoice works a lot better now i disabled the soundcards hardware acceleration. It's made no difference to meh sound (pci128) and it means that I can now breathe without it turning friendly fire on in HL :E
hehe Lo DM m8.
I tried it for the first time last night.
/me begins rubbing his palms on his trousers a la Vic Reeves. :naughty:
It is excellent. The voice recognition is astounding, even able to deal with my very strong Northern Irish accent with no training. You can even type words in, then if you say the word it will recognise you've said it and carry out the associated action.
However, for Q3 the only downside is the noticable delay in reaction (your voice to on-screen action has a delay of approx 200ms), so using it to switch weapons is a no-go (although for Q2 it might be OK considering the far slower weapons switch time), although for binds and stuff it will be a veritable boon. Especially for someone like me who's memory is pretty awful, so remembering any more than 6 binds is a non-starter.
/me wubs it to bits.
:)
And there's very little possibility of me posting on the Q2 forum again. I am a man of my word after all. :)

Hi Sar,
Looks like I will be getting one once the win2k problems are sorted :). My wife is going to think I am even sadder.... If that is possible.
Shame about you not posting on the Q2 forum, I thought you wouldn't :(

DM
Does the voice recognition software use a lot of processing power resulting in an fps drop in games like Q3?
Thanks
It does a bit, but only a bit mind.
And yeah DM, you do feel a bit daft at first shouting "Rocket Launcher", "Railgun" to yourself.

No, stop it. Delete this post now.
No...
Damn, too late, I'm just gonna have to get one now.
I just can't resist gadgets.
Curse you all :D
Alternatively instead of buying Gamevoice go for Game Commander 2 and a freeware voice comms program like Roger Wilco or Teamsound.
Game Commander 2 is a voice recognition package that works fine with current voice comms. It is superior to Gamevoice in recognition speed and CPU overhead as well as having more extra features and a user friendly interface.
It's also cheaper at $30 (about £20) and doesn't require any additional hardware (except a microphone and speakers :) ).
Check out the website: http://www.gamecommander.com
It has consistently got good reviews. Gamevoice on the other hand... :P
