in response to a few people asking if its worth buying, you should'nt need to ask :blitz:
keep this topped and it should save a few repeated replies

me agrees.. JUST BUYT IT! JUST BUY IT!!!!
Right ho, you heard the man.....
...JUST BUY IT! :E
....you know it makes sense, and shouldn't we have a whip round and buy FA a copy, just so he knows what he's talking about
Now there's an idea, though he's gradually learning a few thing through hearsay :)
Oh, and:
JUST BUY IT!!
As FA seems to have vanished from the boards I'm wondering if he's gone and bought it and is currently glued to his monitor, oblivious to everything else. I just hope he's remembering to eat :E
Remembering to eat won't be a problem, they put up helpful messages about that on the load screen, remember? No, it was lack of sleep that almost killed me :{

I agree, the best game I've bought this year :blitz:, don't delay buy it today :).
Yep, along with Deus Ex this is one of the two best games I've played in ages.
Mmmmm.... Deus Ex, Ooops, wrong board.
Buy 'em both :E
Just to keep this thread at the top, why not tell us about Deus Ex? :E
Strangely there are some similarities. Both games offer a freedom of choice in your route through the game and they also both pass moral judgement on your actions.
Finally both games claim to be role-playing games and neither of them are  Controversial I know, but to be honest I don't think we've ever seen a *true* roleplaying game on a computer. Maybe Ultima Online and Everquest, but I've not played these and so wouldn't like to comment.

i got both, though never completed DX i just wanted to go play BG again. If you liked system shock/thief and half-life you should love Dues EX,though Its Balders Gate i keep going back too since if i wanted to go to a dark depressing city with lots of nasty people and smash some1's face in or get my face smashed in, i'd just walk down the road :naughty:
So... Prophet, how do you define a role-playing game? I've never tried Everquest or UO so I don't know what they have that BG2 doesn't.

well after a year and a half of Everquest I can say that if tosspot yanks using stupid words and pretending to be female wood elves when they're really 40 stone blokes who need a crane to get off their chair is roleplaying then this is too....
Mori - a roleplaying game should offer:
Complete freedom to do whatever a player wants and you can only do that in your imagination. A few examples: at the moment I'm battling with a rival guild master, he knows I'm coming for him so my only option (in BGII) is to battle my way through his guards and fight him :{ In roleplay I would have many other options: Draw him out by threatening something he values. Torch the building he's in and wait for him to flee, etc, you get the picture.
Character interaction: In all computer games this is woeful. BGII you generally get offered a choice of responses: good one, bad one and funny one. This is not roleplay and does not allow me to develop a character and relationships in a manner of my choosing.
Complete freedom of plot: All computer games are *very* heavily scripted, basically we're playing through a pre-defined story. True roleplay allows complete freedom to define exactly where your going. I've DM'd plenty of games that I've had to rewrite on the fly 'cos my players have gone of in some very unexpected directions.
Finally, I'm not saying games like BGII, Deus Ex, Ultima whatever are bad, they're not, they're very deep, engrossing and good games, but there not *real* roleplay.
Gilgamesh - what's Everquest like, I keep thinking about trying it, but just never got round to it and I don't really fancy joining a game thats been running for so long. I keep telling myself it'll be better to wait for Ultima Online II.
In that case, I agree with you. It's going to be a long, long time before a single-player CRPG gives you the flexibility of a pen-and-paper game with your friends.
oooh.. now there's a thought, sorry i haven't been round much, had to finish history coursework  :(
but im back for a while now.. :E
j00 could buy me a copy if j00 want :E thankee for the thought though prophet :)

j00 want it and j00 know it :E
Yay Fallen Angels back to write posts with lots o' smileys :)
Mori - yeah it's all in the AI which has a way to go. Imagine a CRPG with voice recognition and AI's with distinct personalities, just a dream at the moment, but when you think how far computer games have come in the last ten years....
ROFL.. it's all in the power of da imeon ya know??
urm.. scarab... you're right there :E damn, i give in too easily  :cheese:
p.s. is imoen in bg2, if so.. does she play a large part, (apart from the romance :E)
Without spoiling anything, yes she is in the game and yes in a round about way she does play a big part :E

Everquest is a hugely combat based mmorpg the only way to become more powerful is to fight and kill. If you like this stuff its great fun from soloing a rat in freeport to a 40 man raid on a dragon.
However most servers are top heavy, ie majority of players high level and this creates lots of problems so the servers eventually become a battleground of backstabbing, mob stealing, raid poaching, loot grabbing, frenzy of epic proportions, all conducted through message boards and in game.
Its a great laugh!
However I am in quite possibly the strongest guild on my server, I never have to worry about not getting on raids where there is only room for 40 people out of 1000 who are the right level to go coz my guild leads or provides most of the firepower for these events so its easy for me to say its fun. A lot of people hate the situation that exists on the servers but what can ya do...

o>k since Scarab told me about this on ICQ
I need a new game and i'm thinking about it now
But has it got online play and what's it like
Its online play isn't its strong point, sadly... it's the same as the single player game, only you get to do it with your mates.
It's great fun if you find the right people to do it with though... like many things in life :naughty:
