View Full Version : PSU again
Dunno if any of u can remember a message i posted a while back about the fact that Gateway put a 200w power supply in my FULL tower case. Anyway you all agreed that i had far too much running off of it as i have added loads....well now it started to make noises and u can smell burning!!!!!!...so i phoned them and it took them 1hour to finally say that they would come and replace it under my paid for 3 year onsite warenty! The thing is that said that all their machines ship with a 200w power supply...so anyway the actual person i spoke to was quite good and put a note on the repair notice that i said 200w was not enough for a tower case....now what i want to know is that if they fit a new 200w again...should i just risk putting a new geforce 2 on it.....and just hope it blows the gateway bits and not mine, or sell it and get a new power supply? If u say get a new one....which one...what rating do i need....how much, where to get....is it difficult...r there different 'power interfaces'...and i'll try and watch what the enginer does as i ain't that good inside pc's!!!!
Thanks and i hope u haven't fallen asleep now!!!
Hi m8,
What cpu are you running ? Mine's a 600 athlon, and the pc came with a 230W psu. This was hopeless with a GeForce DDR fitted (the system kept locking up & getting hot), so I upgraded to a 300W unit. The upgrade was easy, as AMD have a list of recommended psu's, that are stocked by the like of dabs, insight, etc. I ended up getting mine from insight, for £34.
The system works fine now.
Cheers,
forgot to mention....i have a p3 500.....128mb ram.....13gb h/d, dvd rom, cd writer, zip, floppy, dual chan ide on board then a pci promise ultra 66 controler, modem, tv card, sb live 1024, stb tnt 16mb vid, both usb ports used one with hub.....er and i think thats it. i want to put in a geforce 2....lol@ultra version!!!!
Thanks again.....plus anymore bout whether there are different connectors and r they hard to put in etc....
:D That's a serious amount of hardware !
I think the 300W should do it for you too...
They're easy to put in (is it an atx tower case ?). The psu is held in with a few screws, and comes out easy enough. The connectors are all easy to identify, but you can mark the old ones to help you identify the new ones as you put them in. Just make sure that you have an earth wristband on :)!
Cheers,
cheers for help...u is the only one bothered to read my long post! Err........300.....maybe 400 on the safe side...no i rekon 300 too....maybe 350...i don't know how it is working....do u think it is just a good quality 200 if u get what i mean? I'm gonna ask the enigner who comes and see if he'll do a favour and put in a higher one...the enginer i had for my old computer were nice like that...even gave me more ram.....mind u he visited 5 times to fix the problem..hehe. Cheers again.....anymore info on deals would be helpful.... and do i need a AMD approved one...i have an intel chip? weren't they coz the AMD's were fussy?

the AMD approved PSU's are ones that AMD have tested and know can provide enough power on the 3.3 volt lines for the Athlon/T-bird/Durons.
Basically they are good PSU's.
Although many other PSU's are equally good, but have not been submitted to AMD for approval.
Pretty much any 300watt PSU should do you fine :)
Gateway are coming on monday (or there onsite company) to replace the psu...they say that they will replace it with a 200w again..i explained to the technical bloke yet again, and he said that it will support all that i have and the new geforce 2 gts/ultra (lol). However if it blows and damages the system they will only replace their parts and not mine. There is a chance the onsite guy will say that he is gonna put a 300+ in as it needs it but if he puts in a 200w in, what are the chances of it blowing with the new geforce (could it be a 'good quality 200w') and if it does is it likely to damage everything else? Actually more specifcally, is it likely to damage my new sound card, tv card and cd writer or any external thingys like printers...anything else is the responsability of gateways for 2 years....
Cheers....
