I've currently got a Celeron 400 and am thinking of upgrading to a PIII. Here are the things that I don't understand:
1) A PIII 800 is about £100 more expensive than a PIII 600. Is there really such a huge speed increase?
2) Aside from the obvious physical difference, is there anything to recommend Socket 370 over Slot 1, or vice versa?
3) I have PC 100 RAM - will it matter if I get a 133mhz mobo? Does the extra 33 mhz make any real difference?

Hi
1)dont get a PIII get athlon:E
2)somehave said the "flip chips" (socket 370) are better but i dont know!!
3) the PC133 ram doent have a noticable diffrence over PC100! there should be no problems with the PC100 in a PC133 mobo, unless you have ECC ram and the new mobo don't support it:confused:
hope thats of some help!

Ello again :)
Sadly I'm committed to getting an Intel chip since I have to change my mobo before I can afford the chip, and my current processor is a Celeron 400.
I don't know why I'm worrying about which chip to get since the only one I can afford is the 600mhx. Still, I was curious as to whether there is actually a difference or if it's just Intel making a fast buck out of us :monkee:s.
a feeling is coming to me .........

Don't forget that PIII's above round about 600, can have 133 FSB speeds. If you've only got 100 memory, don't get one of the 133 FSB processors.
And Intel shaft us for every penny they think they can get away with. Being market leader for so long, they charged the earth for the best X86 processors thyen available. Although they haven't got them now, they can still charge more as AMD have not got enough capacity to supply the volume Intel can.
The idea is to get enough in profits now, to blast AMD in a couple of years time, using the high profits they get from overpricing now.
And to answer your other question, 133 memory will only make a difference when mated with a 133 FSB. As memory will be transfered quicker, you will see a benefit, but only when using a 133 bus chip and 133 memory together.
