View Full Version : running multiple game servers over LAN from one PC
i'm running a LAN party and i will only have a few machines available as servers so therefore i want to be able to run multiple servers off one computer for different games.
I tried running two dedicated servers in CS but it didn't work cos i presume they are trying to use the same IP and port.
Is it possible to do this? how, another piece of software?
cheers

hmm i wouldnt have thought so, in any case you would need a hella powerful PC IMO.
Would i be right in assuming your LAN is HUB based? rather than the considerable improvement of Switch?
it's switched
dedicated servers m8 so i wouldn't be playin on it and it should be able to handle it easy

hmmm switched with nice juicy 100mb NICs!
surely id reckon you would need very hi spec servers to be able to host more than one Game.
Well I know for hosting q3 servers(FFA, 1v1 & TDM) you only require 16mb of RAM per server, and 24mb per CTF server.
Have a read at these guys : It's not BW's, honest guv (http://guides.barrysworld.com/quake3/)
Speaking of "powerfull" PCs, the ones they use at those i-series LAN parties aint half bad ;)
Think they are of the quad Xeon order, tho don't quote me on that.
Rigo - I suggest you look at planet halflife (www.planethalflife.com), or ask on the HL forum regarding multiple HL servers on the one machine. Tho(as you can read from the above link), Q3 servers are ran from the console, without the GUI front, I imagine HL would be the same.

Rigo you should have no probs running a lot of servers on one PC, you need to put each game server on a seperate port. I ran 2 CS servers, 2 Q3a servers and two UT servers on a P2 400 with NT I used LANMaster from gamespy get some info here (http://www.lanparty.com/lanmaster/lanmaster.shtm)
thx for replies guys
birdy, i had a look at lanmaster, does it allow you to create servers from the prog itself or does it need to be in each game individually? is it essential to use gamespy?
how do i set up a dedicated server in CS (or TFC) where i can specify port? is it a command in console instead of using the GUI? what command is it?
i've setup a dedicated server on this machine and it has no effect on the system at all so i'm pretty sure it could do multiple servers.

WP have the largest server farm in Europe (well over 200+ I believe), but they have no where near that amount of physical servers....
